U-NEXT

U-NEXT is a Japanese subscription streaming service that launched in 2007 as Gyao Next and took its present name in 2009. It is majority owned by U-Next Holdings, with TBS Holdings holding twenty per cent. In February 2023 it merged with Paravi, absorbing that service’s subscribers and adding programming from TBS and TV Tokyo, with the integration completed by July of the same year.
The library is unusually broad for a single subscription: more than 440,000 titles, including roughly 19,400 films and 6,500 anime, alongside about 1.27 million e-book and manga volumes and more than 210 magazines that come with a standard plan. By November 2025 the service reported over five million paying subscribers, the first Japanese operated premium streamer to reach that scale, and in 2024 it held a 17.9 per cent share of Japan’s subscription video market.
For BL and GL viewers the relevance is that U-NEXT carries Japanese live action BL drama, yaoi and yuri anime, and the printed source material behind many of them within the same subscription. The service operates in Japan, so an international viewer normally reaches a title through a separate licensee, which this site notes on the title page.
