BIOGRAPHY

Vera Hsu, credited in Chinese as 徐薇婷 and in transliteration as Hsu Wei-Ting or Wei-Ting XU, is a Taiwanese producer with six credits, all of them with CalFilm Production.

The earlier work is genre cinema and crime drama. Plurality (複身犯, 26 February 2021) is a science fiction thriller. Aozaru Shiao directed it from a screenplay co-written with Hung Tzu-yung, and Tony Yang leads as the body that hosts five implanted personalities, alongside Sandrine Pinna and Frederick Lee. Its premise is a procedure that places the minds of five abduction suspects into one death row inmate so that investigators can reach their memories and find missing children. Filming took place in Taichung, Kaohsiung and Tainan between May and July 2019, the film opened in Kaohsiung three days before its national release, and it earned three nominations at the 23rd Taipei Film Awards, among them Best Actor for Tony Yang.

Taiwan Crime Stories (台灣犯罪故事, 4 January 2023) is a twelve episode crime anthology that went out on Disney+. It dramatises four real Taiwanese criminal cases, each over three episodes, and was made with Imagine Entertainment and Sixty Percent Productions. Murmur of Memories (溟溟, 16 June 2023) is a drama on which Vera Hsu is credited as executive producer, and Antikalpa (化劫, 21 June 2023) is a horror film. A sixth credit is the single episode Gunshot (鎗聲).

The queer credit is Wishing Upon the Shooting Stars (向流星許願的我們), twelve episodes of about forty five minutes from 26 March 2026, carried exclusively in Taiwan on LINE TV. It is adapted from a work by Chung Min-Jui (鍾旻瑞) published by the literary press 九歌出版社, directed by Chiang Jui-chih (姜瑞智), and produced by Vera Hsu together with Sammi Pan (潘心慧). Chung Yueh-hsuan and Chu Meng-hsuan lead, with Yu Chieh-en and Kota Kagami in the second pairing. The premise follows a man who wishes to disappear, wakes with a different identity, and then has to decide what to do when the person he loves begins to recognise him. The story starts when he loses his job in Taipei and goes back to his hometown, where an old school crush, Chen Haowei, now works at a local bed and breakfast, and a summer meteor shower gives the two a reason to meet again.

On the boys’ love series, CalFilm Production is the co-producer and the lead company is Yoiisz International Media.

Wishing Upon the Shooting Stars is the fifth boys’ love production from 有意思國際傳媒 (Yoiisz International Media), made jointly with 犢影制作 (CalFilm Production). It is also the fifth BL series made by the partnership of producer Sammi Pan and director Chiang Jui-chih, who have been attached to all five.

It is the only queer credit among Vera Hsu’s six. The other five are a science fiction thriller, a crime anthology, a horror film, a drama and a single episode, and none of them carries a boys’ love or girls’ love classification.

The dated credits cluster in an unusual way. Three of the five fall inside 2023: the crime anthology on 4 January, the drama on 16 June and the horror film on 21 June, the last two only five days apart. Those three differ in kind, a streaming series, a drama and a feature, so the same production company was carrying several formats at once. Plurality in 2021 opens the list, and Wishing Upon the Shooting Stars in 2026 closes it, which gives the run two outer points five years apart and a dense middle. The platform changes with the format as well, with Disney+ for the anthology and LINE TV, exclusive to Taiwan, for the twelve episode series that carries Sammi Pan as co-producer.

In my view, the list reads like the record of someone who is comfortable moving between very different kinds of story without settling on one. A body thriller built on a medical premise, a real crime anthology for an international streamer, a horror feature and then a gentle romance about being forgotten: the tone changes each time, and the work stays with one production house throughout. If I had to pick a first title, I would take Plurality for its ambition and then Wishing Upon the Shooting Stars to see how far the same producer’s taste reaches when the subject is tender rather than tense.
