SYNOPSIS

Hold on, Harutora-kun (ちょっと待とうよ、春虎くん) is a Japanese Boys' Love series in MBS's late-night Drama Phil slot, adapted from Amekiri's manga for Dear+.

Kishida Sui (Tsubasa Nakagawa) is a second-year at a boys' boarding school. Since being outed to the people around him he has kept himself safe by playing the boy everyone teases, laughing along and letting it pass. A face mask does the rest of the work. What looks like ease is a full-time job.

Then Kurobe Harutora (Masaya Sakuragi), a first-year on the basketball team, moves into his room. Harutora has no talent for the thing Sui has spent two years perfecting: he says what he feels, immediately, to the person he feels it about. The series watches what that does to someone who has trained himself never to answer honestly.

Eight episodes of 25 minutes, directed by Keisuke Shibata and Masayoshi Kishida, written by Mikiko Takahashi and Ryuji Yoshizaki, with a score by Koji Endo. MBS credited an intimacy coordinator and an LGBTQ consultant on the production.

MAIN CAST & CHARACTERS

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Eight episodes, weekly: MBS from 13 August 2026, closing on 1 October 2026, 25 minutes each.
  • Manga adaptation: from Amekiri’s Dear+ series, two volumes, which began life as a one-shot.
  • Dual leads: Tsubasa Nakagawa and Masaya Sakuragi of the group Genin wa Jibun ni Aru., billed by MBS as a two-hander.
  • The premise is masking, not secrecy: Sui is already out. What he hides is how much it costs him to keep smiling about it.
  • Consultants on the credits: MBS lists both an intimacy coordinator and a lawyer as LGBTQ consultant, which is still uncommon on Japanese BL productions.
  • Theme songs: Lienel’s Ichizu na Rondo opens, CHIHIRO’s Honeyy closes.
  • Where to watch: FOD holds the Japanese subscription exclusive, TVer carries a free one-week catch-up window, and GagaOOLala and Viki carry it internationally with subtitles.

EDITOR’S VERDICT

This is a first-look note, not a full review. Three of eight episodes have aired as of 27 August 2026.

What is already clear is that the show is not built on a secret. Sui is out and has been for a while; the drama is in the maintenance work, the smile he keeps up so nobody has to feel awkward around him. Casting an actor with Nakagawa's range in that part is the production's most consequential decision, because the role is mostly reaction.

Keisuke Shibata has directed a run of Japanese BL and gourmet dramas and knows the 25-minute shape well. The presence of an intimacy coordinator and an LGBTQ consultant on the credit list is worth noting on its own terms.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Hold on, Harutora-kun about?

Kishida Sui has been out at his boys' boarding school for a while and survives it by playing along with the teasing. When first-year Kurobe Harutora becomes his roommate and says exactly what he feels, Sui's coping act stops working.

How many episodes are there and when do they air?

Eight episodes of about 25 minutes, weekly on MBS from 13 August 2026 to 1 October 2026.

Why do some sources give Friday dates instead of Thursday?

MBS broadcasts at 1:29 a.m., which Japanese schedules label as Thursday late-night even though the clock has already turned to Friday. The dates on this page follow the broadcaster's own Thursday labelling.

Where can I watch it?

FOD holds the Japanese subscription exclusive and TVer offers a free catch-up window for one week after broadcast. GagaOOLala and Viki carry it internationally with subtitles.

Is it based on a manga?

Yes. Amekiri's manga ran in Shinshokan's Dear+ from November 2021 to January 2025 and was collected in two volumes. A drama CD was released in 2023.

Who are the leads?

Tsubasa Nakagawa as Kishida Sui and Masaya Sakuragi as Kurobe Harutora.

What does the rating on this page mean?

Japan issues no age certificate for television dramas. 15+ here is an editorial classification reflecting the late-night slot and the mature relationship content, not a certificate from a classification body.

Who wrote the theme songs?

Lienel perform the opening theme Ichizu na Rondo and CHIHIRO performs the ending theme Honeyy.
