About this archive

Scripts in this field come in two quite different shapes, and the same credit covers both. Writing an original series means building characters, structure and dialogue from nothing. Adapting a completed novel or comic is closer to editing at scale: deciding what to cut from a long text, how to redistribute material across episodes, what to invent in order to bridge the gaps, and how much to change an ending an existing readership already knows.

Adaptation is the more common job here, and it brings particular pressures. The source is usually finished and published, so an audience can check the work against it, and rights agreements sometimes constrain what may be altered. Writers also work to formats that vary sharply by market, from feature length to a dozen hour long episodes to short episodes of a quarter of an hour, and the same story is shaped very differently in each.

The credit repays tracing because writers in this genre are often less visible than directors while doing much of the work that defines a series. Following one through this site shows which source materials they were trusted with and which production companies kept hiring them.
