Kim Kyung-hwan

BIOGRAPHY

Kim Kyung-hwan (Korean: 김경환) is a South Korean screenwriter and the co-creator of Love Class (수업중입니다, 2022), the Boys’ Love series that premiered on 13 May 2022 and became the only Korean property of its kind to run to a third season.

The series is credited to two creators, Kim Kyung-hwan and Jang Young-seon, and both are also credited as writers. Jang Young-seon additionally directed, alongside Lee Seok-yong and Lee Seong-taek, with Lee Min-jun producing. The cast is led by Sae Byeol as Kim Hyun-jae, Seo I-han as Yoon Soo-an, Lee Woo-jin as Shin Jae-min and Panutuch Saelee as Khun.

Love Class was produced by Studio Yanggwibi with Rad Film, Urban Works, BOXMEDIA and IMU studio, and distributed through Viki, GagaOOLala, wavve and Cinema Heaven. A second season followed in August 2023, adding TVING, and a third arrives in 2026.

A creator credit, which in Korean Boys’ Love is rarer than it sounds

Most Korean Boys’ Love series are adapted, commissioned or assembled around existing material. A named creator credit shared by two people, with both also writing and one of them directing, describes something closer to an authored project than a produced one.

BLGLFlix editorial view. The crew list of Love Class is the most informative document about this page’s subject, because of how short it is. Two creators. The same two people writing. One of them also directing. Three directors total across the run, one producer. Five production companies had to be assembled to pay for it, but the creative core is essentially two names doing several jobs each.

Our own read is that this is what authorship looks like when a genre has no institution behind it. In Thailand a Boys’ Love writer joins a studio that already knows how to make the thing, and the writer’s job stops at the script. Here the people who had the idea also had to write it, direct part of it, and hold it together across three seasons and a change of production home, because there was no machine to hand any of that to. The upside is that Love Class has a consistency of voice most genre series never manage. The cost is that it depended on two people staying in the room, which is a fragile way to build the only Korean Boys’ Love franchise that lasted.

We say plainly what we cannot show. No biography, birth date, photograph or verified social account exists for this writer on any source we accept. The Korean Wikipedia entry under these characters is a disambiguation page listing seven unrelated people, and none of them is identified as a screenwriter, so it is not used here. What the record supports is the work, and the work is the reason for this page.

TRIVIA

  • Love Class carries a shared creator credit, Kim Kyung-hwan with Jang Young-seon, which is uncommon in Korean Boys’ Love where series more often arrive as adaptations or commissions.
  • The co-creator, Jang Young-seon, is credited in three capacities on the same property: creator, writer and director.
  • The series needed five production companies to finance one season, Studio Yanggwibi with Rad Film, Urban Works, BOXMEDIA and IMU studio.
  • It went out on four services at once, Viki, GagaOOLala, wavve and Cinema Heaven, with TVING joining for the second season.
  • Of the thirteen Korean titles in this catalogue, Love Class is the only one with a sequel of any kind, and it has two.
  • The cast includes the Thai performer Panutuch Saelee as Khun, at a point when very little talent moved between the Thai and Korean industries.
  • Four of the leading cast members are also credited on the series’ songs, meaning the performers supplied the soundtrack as well.
