Payback (Novel)
SYNOPSIS
Payback (페이백) is the Korean BL web novel samK wrote before any of the adaptations existed, and it is the version of the story with the most room in it. Lee Yuhan is a young man who spent his school years working for a loan shark instead of studying, collecting money by force from people who had none. One of those debtors came back for him, and Yuhan's younger brother died in his place. The novel begins with the aftermath: a man who has decided the death was his fault, working himself into the ground to pay off a debt he did not create and hospital bills for a mother who is not going to recover.
Five years on, Yuhan finds out that his old roommate Song Myeong-shin knew more about that night than he ever admitted. Myeong-shin has become an actor in the meantime, protected by an agency and an image, and there is no route from Yuhan's life into his. Then Yun Je-i, an executive at the company that manages Myeong-shin, offers Yuhan a way in. The offer is not charity and Yuhan does not treat it as such. What follows is a slow accounting of what he trades away, autonomy first, and then the version of himself that still believed the revenge was about justice.
Prose gives samK room the comic cannot match. The novel stays inside Yuhan's head for long stretches, so his self-loathing reads as a fixed condition rather than a plot problem waiting to be solved, and Je-i stays opaque: the reader gets Yuhan's guesses about him rather than authorial confirmation, which makes the imbalance between them harder to look away from. The book's publication history is unusual too. samK first released it as a self-published three-volume set in 2010, with a reprint in 2013 and a spin-off volume in 2015, and for over a decade it circulated as a doujinshi title rather than a commercial one. Pilyeon Management issued the complete work through Ridibooks in November 2022 as a six-volume digital edition, alongside the two-volume sequel Paid Payback, and it won a BL novel e-book prize at the 2023 Ridi Awards. Fujoking's manhwa adaptation had already begun serialising the year before, which is why many readers meet the comic first and arrive at the novel afterwards.
