About this archive
Much of the genre’s vocabulary was set in Japan, where boys love and yuri developed first as publishing categories, supported by dedicated magazines, imprints and a long running self published scene that has fed professional careers for decades. Comics and prose remain the base layer: a very large proportion of screen and audio work is adapted from an existing manga, light novel or web comic rather than written directly for production.
Live action series tend to be made to a compact format, often short episode counts in late night broadcast slots or for streaming, produced by television companies and production houses working to conventional industry structures. Animation generally follows the production committee model, in which several companies share the financing and the rights between them.
Careers are usually built across several tracks at once. Performers come from stage, modelling, idol groups and agency rosters, and a BL or GL role tends to sit inside a broader working filmography rather than defining it. Voice acting is a separate and well established profession with its own agencies and training, and audio drama is a major commercial format in its own right, which is why many Japanese profiles on this site carry credits that never appeared on a screen at all.
