Love Class

Love Class (수업중입니다; RR: Sueop Jung-imnida) is a 2022 South Korean boys' love youth romance and the first season of the Love Class series. Its premise is a university elective built around romance itself: students are paired off and sent on dates as part of a running series of love experiments, and the results come back to the classroom to be discussed like ordinary coursework. Cha Ji-woo (Han Hyun-jun) is a gentle, soft-spoken Mass Communication sophomore who signs up without expecting anything to actually happen to him. Lee Ro-a (Kim Tae-hwan) is the kind upperclassman who has just come back from military service, a little older than his classmates in more ways than one. The assignment puts the two of them together, and almost immediately the exercise stops behaving like an exercise.

Ji-woo's quiet curiosity turns, slowly and very awkwardly, into a first love he has no vocabulary for, and Roa's steadiness gives that feeling somewhere to land. Around them the class keeps generating complications. Kim Nam-jun (Yoo Hyuk-jae) and Bae Yu-na (Ryu In-ah) work through paired assignments of their own, Min-jae (Lee Young-kyo) and Kim Hye-won (Kim Hye-jin) circle the group's shifting friendships, and Professor Lim (Won Tae-hee) keeps setting tasks that push everyone further than they meant to go. Much of the comedy comes from the gap between the course's clinical framing and what the students are actually feeling. The tension comes from Ji-woo's uncertainty about whether the attention he is receiving belongs to the assignment or to him, a question he is far too polite to ask out loud.

Directed by Lee Seong-taek and written by Kim Kyung-hwan, the short-form series ran six episodes on Rakuten Viki in May 2022, and its brevity is part of the design. Episodes are compact, the register stays sweet and tentative rather than dramatic, and conflict is kept at the scale of misread messages and unfinished sentences. The season holds its focus on the ordinary logistics of a crush, where to sit and what to say next and how to leave without ruining anything, rather than on obstacles imposed from outside. That gentleness is what made it a durable entry point for the franchise, one that would go on to spawn two further seasons and eventually the K-pop-set Love Class 3. It streams with subtitles on Rakuten Viki and Netflix.
