SYNOPSIS

One summer two young men become close, and then the summer ends and they go their separate ways with nothing said. Years pass, and both change more than either would have guessed. When chance puts them in the same room again, one of them decides he is not letting the other walk off a second time. George (Nathan Cheung) and Mike (Lawrence Fok) carry a story told across two time periods, cutting between that first summer and a present in which new commitments and working relationships govern what can be said aloud, with Cindy (Sherman Chan), Abby (Maggie Kwan), Pony (Mira Leung) and Ricky (Matthew Ho) around them.

Timing is the whole of it: the gap between what was felt and what was said, and a reunion treated as a chance to answer a question left open years earlier. Ambition and the chasing of a personal goal sit beside the romance in the way the series presents itself, and at six episodes of about ten minutes the entire run is shorter than a feature film, which holds it to a small number of encounters. Each instalment carries its own title rather than a number, opening on a vanished first love and closing on fireworks going up.

The producer is not a drama house. D.A.C.K. Concept is a digital marketing agency in San Po Kong whose regular business is performance marketing, social media management and video production for brands including Canon, 3M, Del Monte and Wilson Parking, and it made this as a showcase for its own production and social capability, listing the series on the company site among its client campaigns and reporting the viewing figures the way it reports campaign results: more than three million views across Hong Kong and Greater China in 2024, by the agency's own count. Confusingly, that portfolio entry calls the series If I do rather than Our Golden Times. Six episodes went out weekly on Mondays at 9pm from 9 September to 14 October 2024, free and simultaneously across Instagram, Facebook and YouTube rather than through any broadcaster or subscription service, which by then was the standard route for a Hong Kong web BL.

EDITOR’S VERDICT

5.8/10

Reviewed by Renkaze, editor of BL & GL Flix

Six episodes of about ten minutes makes an hour, which is less than a feature and roughly a third of what a series with two timelines needs. Our Golden Times wants to move between a summer that went unspoken and a present in which both men have new commitments, and it has around five minutes per period per episode in which to do it. The result is not bad so much as unbuilt.

A decent idea with nowhere to put itself

The premise is sound and unfashionably grown-up: not a first meeting but a second one, with one man deciding he will not let the same silence happen twice. Reunion stories work because the audience can feel the weight of the years, and feeling that weight requires spending time in both of them. Here the past is a handful of bright fragments and the present a handful of meetings, and the gap between them, which is supposed to be the entire subject, is asserted rather than accumulated. Nathan Cheung and Lawrence Fok are asked to convey a decade of change in the difference between two haircuts. The episode titles give the shape away: six named moments, opening on a vanished first love and closing on fireworks, which is a mood board more than a structure.

What the series was actually for

This matters to the assessment, so it should be plain. The producer is not a drama house but D.A.C.K. Concept, a digital marketing agency in San Po Kong whose usual work is performance marketing and brand video for clients including Canon, 3M and Del Monte. The series sits on the company's own site among its client campaigns, the view count is reported the way a campaign result is reported — more than three million across Hong Kong and Greater China in 2024, by the agency's own count and nobody else's — and the portfolio entry does not even use the same English title, calling it If I do. A showcase piece is a legitimate way to finance a drama and it does explain the priorities on display: platform-native lengths, simultaneous release across Instagram, Facebook and YouTube, a shape optimised for a feed.

The limits of this judgement

There is no independent criticism of this title to weigh, no classification, no measured audience figure, and the credits are thin enough that the cast are listed by English screen names only. What can be assessed is the running time against the ambition, the release strategy, and who paid for it and why, and on those grounds this is a competent, pleasant, and very slight hour whose best idea needed three times the room it was given.

Final Score: 5.8/10

What Our Golden Times is about

The story begins in a summer during which two people become close friends and then part while their feelings remain unspoken. Years later, both changed by the intervening time, they meet again by chance, and one of them resolves not to let the other slip away a second time. The series is concerned with timing and with the gap between what was felt and what was said, treating the reunion as a chance to answer a question that was left open.

Ambition and the pursuit of a personal goal run alongside the romance in the promotional framing, and the short episode length keeps the focus on a small number of encounters. Memory, changed circumstances and the willingness to act on an old attachment supply its main material.

Our Golden Times sits in the part of the Hong Kong BL scene that is financed outside broadcasting, here by a marketing agency using an original drama as a showcase for its own production and social media capability; the company lists the series on its site alongside its client campaigns and reports its view count the way it reports campaign results. Distribution is free and simultaneous across Instagram, Facebook and YouTube rather than through a broadcaster or a subscription platform, which is the standard pattern for Hong Kong web BL after 2021.

Episode lengths of about ten minutes and a six episode season are also typical of the format, which is built for vertical social feeds as much as for long form viewing. The Chinese University of Hong Kong Centre for Cultural Studies feature on the genre records that Hong Kong BL activity in this period has been led by independent producers and fan organisers, including the first Hong Kong BL Festival at Eaton HK in November 2023.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who produced Our Golden Times?

Not a drama house but D.A.C.K. Concept, a Hong Kong digital marketing agency in San Po Kong whose regular business is performance marketing, social media management and video production for brand clients including Canon, 3M, Del Monte and Wilson Parking.

Why does the agency list the series under a different English name?

On its own company site the drama appears as If I do rather than Our Golden Times, so the title readers will find in the agency's portfolio does not match the one on the episodes themselves. Both refer to the same six part run.

How many views did the series reach?

D.A.C.K. Concept states on its company site that the series, listed there as If I do, reached over three million views across Hong Kong and Greater China in 2024. That figure comes from the producer rather than from an independent measurement.

On which platforms did each episode go live?

Simultaneously on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube, weekly on Mondays at 21:00 Hong Kong time from 9 September to 14 October 2024. The official accounts announced each episode as a three platform release rather than pointing viewers to one channel.

What is the total running time of all six episodes?

Roughly one hour. Six episodes of about ten minutes each means the complete run is shorter than a single feature film, which keeps the focus on a small number of encounters.

How does the story move between time periods?

It runs across two, the summer the two men first met and the present, where new commitments and working relationships shape what they can say to each other. The reunion is treated as a chance to answer a question left open.

Does each episode have its own title?

Yes. Episode one is titled after a vanished first love and the finale after fireworks going up, so the titles frame the run as a set of distinct moments rather than as numbered instalments.

How does the production tag the series?

The official Instagram account uses tags for chasing dreams, courage and dragon pearl alongside the BL and web drama tags, which places ambition and a personal goal beside the romance in the promotional framing.

Has Our Golden Times been classified?

No official classification was found, and MyDramaList lists it as Not Yet Rated. That is usual for a Hong Kong web series released free on social platforms rather than through a broadcaster or a licensed streamer.
