Payback (Manhwa)

Payback (페이백) opens on a debt collector who has already lost. Lee Yuhan spent his teenage years working for a loan shark, leaning on people who could not pay and taking whatever they had left. That work followed him home: a debtor he had squeezed came back for revenge, and Yuhan's younger brother died for it. What remains afterwards is a man in his late twenties carrying his mother's hospital bills, a debt he inherited rather than chose, and a habit of treating whatever happens to him as deserved.

The story restarts five years later, when Yuhan learns that his former roommate Song Myeong-shin was not a bystander to that night. Myeong-shin has since become a working actor, insulated by an agency and a manufactured public image, and the distance between the two lives is what drives the plot. Yuhan has no money, no leverage and no plan. What he has is an offer from Yun Je-i, an executive inside the entertainment company that manages Myeong-shin, who is willing to place Yuhan close enough to do real damage, for reasons Je-i does not explain and Yuhan does not ask about. The arrangement is transactional from the first chapter, and each man knows the other is using it. Yuhan buys his way into Myeong-shin's world with dependence on Je-i, and the further the revenge advances, the less it resembles justice.

samK's original web novel is built around the cost of that bargain rather than its payoff, and Fujoking's manhwa adaptation keeps the shape. The entertainment-industry setting is not decoration: contracts, publicity cycles and the question of who owns whose career are the instruments these characters use to hurt each other, and the relationship between the two men runs inside that same economy of leverage, which is why the Korean edition carries the publisher's mature rating, and why the series lands as a crime melodrama with a romance inside it rather than the reverse. The main run closed at ninety-five episodes in November 2024, and a fourteen-chapter side story serialised as Abduction ran from March to August 2025, following Yuhan and Je-i past the point where the main plot stopped. Neither half hands the reader a comfortable moral position.
