BIOGRAPHY

Chao Planoy (Thai: เจ้าปลาน้อย) is the pen name of Phetphailin Rattananam (เพชรไพลิน รัตนนาม; born 21 August 1985), a Thai novelist. Eight of her novels have been adapted for screen, beginning with GAP in 2022.

Her earliest screen credits are as creator on the lakorn Ruk Tong Aoom (2014) and on Ugly Duckling (2015), the GMMTV school series that ran across multiple parts.

The adaptations

All eight are girls’ love series, and each credits her as the source novel:

  • GAP (2022, 12 episodes), an office romance
  • Pluto (2024, 12 episodes)
  • Affair (2024, 8 episodes)
  • My Marvellous Dream Is You (2024, 12 episodes), a fantasy
  • Apple My Love (2024, 6 episodes)
  • Mate (2024, 12 episodes), made as a lakorn rather than a streaming series
  • Us (2025, 12 episodes), adapted for GMMTV
  • Crush

Five of those arrived in 2024 alone. On several she is credited both for the novel and as creator of the series built from it.

Three of the adaptations are easy to place by their screens. In GAP, Rebecca Patricia Armstrong plays Mon, a graduate taking an internship, and Sarocha Chankimha plays Sam, the chairwoman of the company. Pluto ran on GMM 25 from 19 October 2024 to 4 January 2025 with Tipnaree Weerawatnodom and Rachanun Mahawan in the lead roles, and follows a woman who takes her twin sister’s place after an accident. Us aired on GMM 25 and on YouTube from 18 January to 5 April 2025, directed by Kanittha Kwunyoo for GMMTV and Nar-ra-tor.

The story of Us centres on a nineteen year old woman working in a cafe who admires a twenty two year old dental student. Complications begin when her twenty seven year old brother, a medical student, falls for the same person and asks for help, which forces her to hide what she feels.

Every girls’ love series credited to Chao Planoy began as one of her novels, and the first of them reached screen eight years after her first credit as a creator.

Her 2014 and 2015 credits, Ruk Tong Aoom and Ugly Duckling, are not girls’ love, so the genre work came later in her career. The adaptations that followed range from six to twelve episodes and from streaming series to a lakorn and a GMMTV production.

The episode counts reward a closer look. Four of the six adaptations with a stated length run to twelve episodes: GAP, Pluto, My Marvellous Dream Is You and Mate, and Us in 2025 also holds to twelve. The two shorter ones, Affair at eight and Apple My Love at six, came in the same 2024 season. So a single writer supplied a standard twelve episode length to several producers while also feeding shorter formats. The settings change with the format: an office romance in GAP, a fantasy in My Marvellous Dream Is You, a lakorn in Mate. The constant is the page, not the screen: one author, eight books, and the 2024 run of five adaptations in a single calendar year.

In my view the novels suit the screen because each rests on a situation that can be said in one breath: a sister taking a twin’s place, a brother asking for matchmaking help, a graduate who admires the woman running the company. That clarity makes the long list easy to follow.
