Choc7 (超克7)

BIOGRAPHY

Choc7 (Chinese: 超克7) is a Taiwanese boy band from Taipei, announced in 2008 and debuting in 2009 with the EP 太青春 (Too Young), released on 29 May 2009 through Gold Typhoon.

The seven members are Ah Ben as leader, Modi, Gevin, Vibo, Peter, Shawn and Louis. Ah Ben, Weng Rui-di, was the band’s leader and guitarist and now also works as a screenwriter, actor and television host; he holds a profile of his own in this catalogue.

The band is recorded as running from 2009 onward. Its genre is given simply as pop.

Choc7’s roots lie in a run of televised contests rather than a single audition. Through 2008 the trainees of Mo Fan Bang Bang Tang were split into Knights of Princess and Elite of Otaku, who released the two version EP Adventure World in July that year, and seven of the ten were then brought together as Choc7. Gold Typhoon released the debut mini album 太青春 Too Young on 29 May 2009, with lyrics contributed by Lollipop, the label’s earlier band from the same show.

The band was built as a playing group as much as a singing one, with guitar, bass, drums, bongos and electric piano shared among the seven. From 2010 the members increasingly worked on individual projects in music, presenting and acting.

FUN FACTS

  • Choc7 came out of Channel V’s talent programme Mo Fan Bang Bang Tang (模范棒棒堂), the second band the show produced after Lollipop.
  • Before the band was settled, two five-member teams ran in parallel through 2008, Knights of Princess (公主幫) and Elite of Otaku (宅男塾); seven of those ten went on to form Choc7, which is where the 7 in the name comes from.
  • Those two teams released a shared EP, Adventure World (冒險世界), on 11 July 2008 in two versions, one for each team.
  • Lollipop, from the same programme and the same label, wrote lyrics for the Choc7 mini album, their first lyric contribution to another act.
  • Every member is credited with an instrument across the group’s work, covering guitar, electric guitar, bass, drums, bongos and electric piano.
  • The debut EP 太青春 Too Young was released on 29 May 2009 through Gold Typhoon, the label formerly known as EMI Music in the region, and holds three tracks.
