FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What did Tseng Jing Hua go to university to become?

A director. He entered the Department of Film and Television at I-Shou University intending to work behind the camera rather than in front of it, took a Bachelor of Fine Arts and appeared in student productions along the way. The university named him an outstanding departmental alumnus in 2024.

How was he cast in Detention?

Through an open call reported to have drawn around ten thousand applicants. The role of Wei Chung Ting was his professional debut and it brought a Best New Performer nomination at the 56th Golden Horse Awards.

What habit did that first film leave him with?

A daily journal. A performance teacher asked him to start one during the later part of the Detention shoot, and he has kept it up since, recording daily observations and notes on the films he watches.

What has he actually won, as opposed to been nominated for?

Two prizes. Best Supporting Actor at the 62nd Golden Horse Awards in 2025 for Family Matters, and Best Lead Actor at the 2026 Global OTT Awards. Before those came three nominations without a win: the Golden Horse Awards in 2019, the Taipei Film Awards in 2020 and the Golden Bell Awards in 2024.

What skill did a role teach him?

Calligraphy, which he learned for the series 不良執念清除師. It sits alongside his taste for older films and older music, which is why he describes himself as having an old soul.

What does he say matters more to him than awards?

Artistic growth. He has said he wants to become an irreplaceable actor whose roles only he could play, and that this matters to him more than prizes do, which is a striking position from someone who has since won two.

What does he do away from acting?

He serves as a public welfare ambassador supporting stray dog rescue, and in 2023 he was a regular member of a Taiwanese travel variety programme. He is the only boy among five siblings, with three older sisters and one younger sister.
