Masahiro Toda

Masahiro Toda (Japanese: 戸田昌宏, born 28 March 1968) is a Japanese actor from Shizuoka Prefecture with more than eighty screen credits. He is a character actor in the fullest sense of the term: the lawyer, the detective, the section chief, the father, the man in the room whose job is to make the scene feel real.

His film work is the part of his record that a casual viewer is least likely to know and most likely to have seen. He appeared in three Kiyoshi Kurosawa films, playing Toru Hanaoka in Cure (1997), Ueda in License to Live (1999) and an assistant in Doppelganger (2003). Other credits include Doing Time (2002), Vibrator (2003), Casshern (2004), Canary (2005), In the Pool (2005), Eli Eli Lema Sabachthani (2005), Patchi! Love Peace (2007) and Rurouni Kenshin: The Final (2021), where he played an abbot.

On television he has been a fixture at NHK for three decades, from Yume Goyomi Nagasaki Bugyo in 1996 through the taiga dramas Furin Kazan (2007) as Nagao Harukage and Yae no Sakura (2013), the morning serial Totto Nee-chan (2016), Sniffer (2016), North Light (2020), The Honest Realtor (2022) and Tora ni Tsubasa (2024), where he played the lawyer Ogata. Elsewhere he has appeared in Galileo (2007), Code Blue (2008), Legal High (2012), Mr. Housekeeper, Mitazono (2016), Shinhannin Flag (2021), Doctor Price (2025) and, going back further, the Keitai Deka series in 2004 and 2006.

Theatre runs alongside all of it. He has worked repeatedly with the company Yuenchi Saisei Jigyodan and with productions staged by Ryo Iwamatsu, and has appeared at the New National Theatre and the Saitama Arts Theatre. He also runs his own theatre unit, Puriseta, and has directed at least once, on the 2003 project Cop Festival: New Beginning.

He plays Yuma’s father in The Boy and I Who Will Break Up in 100 Days.
