Thanadol Nuansut
BIOGRAPHY
Thanadol Nuansut (Thai: ธนดล นวลสุทธิ์), credited in some releases as James Thanadol Nuansut and occasionally romanised as Thanadon Nuansutthi, is a Thai film director, screenwriter and producer with a career in the commercial Thai film industry stretching back to 2004. For readers of this site he is the director, screenwriter and story writer of Uranus2324 (2024), the science-fiction romance that stands as the largest-scale GL feature Thailand has produced.
His route to that film was an unusually long one. He began on set rather than in the writers’ room, working as an assistant and first assistant director through more than a decade of Thai studio production: The Sisters (2004, where he also appears on screen as Lt. Jakrit), Sassy Player (2009), Oh My Ghost 2 (2011) and Oh My Ghost 3 (2012), Spicy Robbery (2012), the Make Me Shudder films (2013 and 2014), Dangerous Boys (2014), Fast 888 (2016), Zombie Fighters (2017), The Last Heroes (2018) and Pojaman The Legacy (2020).
He started directing his own features in parallel. The Intruder (2010) was his first credit as director and screenwriter. The Unborn Child (2011) followed, on which he took all three roles of director, screenwriter and first assistant director at once, then Love at First Flood (2012), Still 2 (2014, again directing and writing) and Latitude 6 (2015).
From 2021 onward his work shifts toward producing and long-form television. He produced Haunted Tales (2021), Love Battle vs Bullfighting (2022), E-Sarn Zombie (2023), Magic Love (2023), Postman (2023) and The Djinn’s Curse (2023). In 2022 he created, wrote and directed all fourteen episodes of Finding the Rainbow, a period romance series that runs its love story across the 1992 Black May events, 11 September 2001 and the 2021 pandemic. The same year he directed an episode of School Tales the Series.
Uranus2324 in 2024 is the point where those two lines meet: a genre feature with the production scale of his horror background, carrying a central relationship between two women.
BLGLFlix editorial view. Thanadol’s filmography tells you something about how Thai GL scaled that the on-screen pairings alone do not. Thailand’s BL boom grew inside the television system, out of GMMTV and its competitors, with directors who came up making series. GL, arriving later and with fewer episodes to its name, went a different way and reached into the commercial film industry instead. Handing Thailand’s most ambitious GL feature to a director whose credit list is dominated by ghost comedies and zombie pictures is not the mismatch it looks like on paper. It is a studio decision about who can deliver a large genre shoot on schedule. Our own read is that this is the more durable model of the two: a GL production that can draw on twenty years of mainstream crew experience is far less fragile than one built entirely on a fandom’s attachment to a specific pair, and it is a reason to expect Thai GL to keep widening its range rather than settling into the pattern BL fell into.
