What happens

Two men in Hong Kong are hiding what they are, and each is the person that secret is most dangerous around. Mok Fei-foon (Kingston Yi Xuan) is a police officer working undercover, sent in under a false name to take an underworld operation apart from the inside. Hui Leuk-to (Leo Peng Ziye) runs a business group knitted into that same underworld, with a family empire standing behind him. They get close. Neither knows the truth about the other, and every step closer raises the price of keeping it that way.

A counterfeiting operation and a war between rival groups keep tightening around the pair, and the crime plot does not pause for the romance. Pat Ha Man-jik, a pioneering figure in Hong Kong action cinema, plays Hui Wong Wan-ping. Sing Lee plays Chiu Yan, Ethan Ku Gu Yihang plays Hui Luk Ching, Jonathan Hau Yuanhao plays Tam Fung and Hugo Wong Sing Cheuk plays Lam Tung Sek.

Ash is adapted from the novel 煙灰 by the Chinese writer Feng Nong and performed in Cantonese. Brando directed the nine episodes, which run 45 minutes each, and Tongmeng International produced the series. Youku released the first two episodes together on 14 August 2026 and then moved to one a week, closing on 2 October.

Ash puts a secret on each side of the same relationship. Mok Fei-foon, played by Kingston Yi Xuan, is a police officer working undercover under a false name. Hui Leuk-to, played by Leo Peng Ziye, heads a business group tied into the underworld, with a family empire behind him. Neither man knows the truth about the other, and that symmetry is the observation the series is built to test: what each is withholding is not a feeling but a position.

A position cannot be confessed away

In most romances the withheld thing is a feeling, and saying it aloud resolves the problem. Here the withheld thing is an allegiance. A police officer inside a criminal operation and the man who runs a business connected to it cannot settle matters by telling each other how they feel, because the truth would end one of their lives as they know them. That is why the suspense and the romance draw on one source instead of pulling against each other: every step toward each other raises the cost of the lie both are keeping.

The pressures around them

A counterfeiting operation and a war between rival groups keep the plot moving whether or not the two men are ready. Pat Ha Man-jik joins the supporting cast as Hui Wong Wan-ping, which places a name from Hong Kong action cinema inside a story that draws on crime-film conventions. Brando directed, and the whole drama is performed in Cantonese.

How it was released

Nine episodes of 45 minutes made up the season on Youku. The first two arrived together on 14 August 2026, and the remaining seven followed one a week until 2 October, 49 days from opening to finale. The total comes to 405 minutes, a little under seven hours, so the series can be followed at a weekly pace or in one long weekend.

Who it suits

Viewers who like undercover stories in which both leads are concealing something will find that idea applied to each of them at once, with the novel by Feng Nong providing the source material.

A police officer goes in under a false name to work an underworld operation from the inside, and then falls for one of the people running it. That is the whole engine. Both men are holding something back, which means the suspense and the romance are coming from the same place instead of pulling against each other.

The turn arrives when a marriage is required of the other man. Everything looks settled and happy, and then the ground moves again. The characters are why it holds. They are placed properly and early, so the later swings land rather than feel arranged, and the nine episodes go by faster than their forty five minutes suggest. Made in Cantonese for Youku, with a Feng Nong novel underneath, and the passion is played openly throughout.

Themes

Each lead answers to an institution that the other one threatens. Mok Fei-foon serves the police, while Hui Leuk-to answers to a business group and a family empire. Falling for each other means that each man's loyalty to his own side is tested by the person he trusts least on paper and most in practice.

Interesting facts
