BIOGRAPHY
Hui Yuet-sheung (許月湘), billed as Vanora Hui, is a Hong Kong actor born on 15 August 1998 in Hong Kong. She has nine screen credits going back to 2020, across Hong Kong cinema and ViuTV drama, and one of them is the Cantonese-language Boys’ Love series that brought her onto this site.
Her most widely seen film is In Broad Daylight (白日之下), the 2023 Hong Kong crime drama directed by Lawrence Kan and co-written with Tong Chui-ping, in which an undercover journalist investigates the suspected mistreatment of residents at a care home. It was drawn from two real Hong Kong cases, was well received, and collected sixteen nominations at the 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards. She is credited in the cast alongside Jennifer Yu, David Chiang, Bowie Lam, Rachel Leung and Nina Paw.
Her other film work runs from Moonrise After in 2020, where she plays Sze, through Please Hold On and CHIAROSCURO in 2023, True Love, For Once in My Life in 2025 and Table Read in June 2026. On television she appeared in an episode of the ViuTV drama Before the End (存酒人) in December 2025, about a closing bar returning unclaimed bottles to their owners, and then in all ten episodes of Life’s Punchline (喜劇開場), the ViuTV series made by MakerVille that ran in June 2026, about three men who have spent ten years on a comedy troupe and set themselves a deadline to succeed or disband.
In August 2026 she joined Ash (煙灰), where TMDB credits her, in Mandarin romanisation, as He Dongfang. Ash follows an undercover police officer and the head of a business group connected to Hong Kong’s criminal underworld as the two grow close while hiding what each of them is. It is adapted from a novel by the Chinese writer Feng Nong, was produced in Hong Kong and filmed entirely in Cantonese, and premiered on Youku on 14 August 2026 with two episodes, then weekly on Fridays across nine episodes of about thirty minutes.

She is the evidence for a claim that is easy to make loosely about Ash: that it is unusual because it surrounds three newcomer leads with established Hong Kong screen actors rather than filling every role with unknowns, which is how BL is cast almost everywhere. A film with sixteen Hong Kong Film Awards nominations sits on her record. So does Pat Ha’s career, and Justin Cheung’s. This is a first attempt at a Hong Kong BL industry that went and hired people who already had careers, and that is a different kind of production decision from the one the format usually makes.
Where her television work sits is the other thing worth pointing at. Both her series, Before the End and Life’s Punchline, are ViuTV, and Life’s Punchline is a MakerVille production. ViuTV has spent several years building an alternative to the dominant Hong Kong broadcaster and has been notably more willing to make queer-adjacent and format-experimental drama. An actor moving between ViuTV series, Hong Kong feature film and a Cantonese BL on Youku is describing, through her own career, roughly the whole shape of Hong Kong screen work in this period.
One caution about her Ash character that applies to the whole series. TMDB catalogues its cast in Mandarin pinyin while English-language coverage uses Cantonese, so the same character can carry two entirely different-looking names. He Dongfang is published here because that is what TMDB gives; no Cantonese form is established in any source located, and English Wikipedia lists her among the supporting cast without naming her character at all. For a series whose whole identity is that it was made in Cantonese, that is a strange gap in the record.
