What happens

Love Algorithm (Chinese title 恋爱演算法) is a Malaysian boys' love series released on WeTV, with ten episodes streaming weekly from 15 July 2026 to 16 September 2026.

Cole is a scriptwriter preparing a reality dating programme. When his supervisor asks him to rework the production for the new season, he has to invite Phil, a popular online singer and his estranged former best friend, to join the cast. The two have not been close for years, and an old hurt over a love triangle from their past remains unresolved. Working together behind the scenes and staging mock dates for the cameras, they reconnect, and they come to realise that the feelings they buried were meant for each other rather than for the girl they both believed they loved.

The reality show gives the story a second layer. To boost publicity, Phil is paired with January, a guest and former internet celebrity, for a staged romance, and real feelings begin to grow between them. Scripted and genuine emotions keep pulling against each other until the programme's script leaks publicly, pushing the production and everyone's reputation into a storm of public attention. Cole and Phil then have to choose between manufactured narratives and authentic love.

Jack Gohr plays Cole and Zhen Ning plays Phil, with May Ho as January and Lynn Lim, Jansen Lau and Shu Sen in the cast. Tan Seng Kiat and Mickey Lai direct, and Colin Sim, founder of ByCOLIN, produces for ByCOLIN Series. The story is an original screenplay, and Jack Gohr performs the series song Unsaid.

A man who writes romance for a living

Cole works as a scriptwriter for reality dating programmes, so his job is to shape how other people fall in love on camera. The series places him inside one of those productions, and the plot turns on the moment a script leaks publicly. A drama about a writer of staged romance ties its central device to his profession, because the thing that goes wrong is the thing he makes.

Two layers of pretending

Phil joins the programme as a name with an audience, a singer who has gone viral. For publicity he is paired with January, a guest played by May Ho and a former internet celebrity, in a staged romance that begins as a production decision. The series runs the staged story and the private one side by side, and the interest lies in where one stops and the other begins. The rift between Cole and Phil comes from a love triangle in their past, so the present day production reopens an old misunderstanding rather than starting a new one.

Ten Wednesdays on WeTV

WeTV released one episode a week, beginning on 15 July 2026 and finishing on 16 September 2026. A weekly pace suits a story about slow reconnection, because the leads spend the run moving from distance to contact. Jack Gohr and Zhen Ning carry the two roles, with Lynn Lim, Jansen Lau and Shu Sen in support.

Directors from the film world

Tan Seng Kiat and Mickey Lai direct, and the production presents their pairing as bringing film level standards to a web series. Tan studied film at the Taiwan National University of the Arts, and his first feature was nominated for Best New Director at the 54th Golden Horse Awards. Lai is a Malaysian filmmaker trained in London, whose short film won the Best International Short award in the Pardi di Domani section at the 2024 Locarno Film Festival.

A producer from fashion

Colin Sim, founder of the creative brand ByCOLIN, has worked on visual campaigns for international luxury brands, and Love Algorithm is his first step from fashion into drama production. A professional fashion team handled the styling, which gives the costume work a larger role than it usually has in a web series. The lead actor also sings the series song, Unsaid.

Themes

The series is built on the gap between what is written and what is felt. Cole makes his living scripting romance for reality television, and the plot sets his professional craft against a feeling he cannot script, since the person he has to work beside is the friend whose absence he never resolved. The old love triangle that split the two friends is revisited as a misunderstanding about whom each of them cared for.

The second storyline adds a mirror. Phil and January are asked to perform a romance for publicity, and the staged relationship starts producing real feeling, so the programme repeats on screen what is happening between the leads off screen. The leaked script then forces the question of whether a story chosen for an audience can be exchanged for one chosen by the people living it.

Interesting facts

  • Tan Seng Kiat won the million dollar prize at the Golden Horse Film Project Promotion twice, the first director to do so.
  • Mickey Lai has been invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a member.
  • The first episode on WeTV is free, and later episodes require VIP membership.

How it was made

The official teaser was released on 8 July 2026 on the ByCOLIN Series channel, announcing the premiere on WeTV for 15 July 2026. The production was built to a cinematic standard, with attention to art direction, camera work and lighting, and a professional fashion team designed the styling. Colin Sim moved into drama production from fashion and creative direction.
