What happens

Duty First, Kiss Later (Japanese: キスは捜査のあとで, Kiss wa Sosa no Ato de) is a Japanese boys' love television drama from ABC Television in Osaka. It began on Monday 27 July 2026 at 0:10 am on the Kansai local broadcast, which is late Sunday night, with a first episode that started at 0:35. It ran for ten episodes and ended on 28 September 2026.

It is adapted from the manga of the same name by Suu, published by J Publishing, a series with more than 150,000 copies in circulation. Kokeshi Murata writes the scripts, and Takahiro Ouchi and Yoshifumi Asami direct. The producers are Yohei Fujita, Mami Terakawa and Taku Kawanishi of ABC Libra, and ABC holds the production credit.

The setting is a police station in a country town. Takoi Heisuke (多古井平助) is a kind, unmarried detective aged 38. Shiono Shu (塩野秀) is a sharp tongued, elite junior colleague. The drama follows the two as cases arrive and their working relationship turns into something harder to name, with a mix of crime investigation and the awkward feelings of two adults who do not say what they mean. By the eighth episode a rival for Shiono's attention has appeared in Date George (伊達ジョージ), and Takoi answers the challenge by saying that he is the one beside Shiono now.

Shu Watanabe plays Takoi and Saito (齋藤璃佑) plays Shiono. Haruka Kudo, Yuta Kanai, ドロンズ石本, Joji Shibue and 小方蒼介 are also in the cast. The theme song, Natsumeki, is performed by OCTPATH.

A title with its order reversed

The Japanese title promises that the kiss comes after the investigation. The drama does not hold to that order. The second episode already carries the first kiss between the two leads, and the fourth episode follows with a second attempt that does not complete. The title names a rule of duty before pleasure that the two officers keep breaking, and the gap between the rule and the story is where the drama finds its comedy.

Two adults in a small station

The leads are a kind, unmarried detective of 38 and an elite junior colleague with a cutting tongue. Both are grown professionals in a rural police station, and the drama sets their feelings inside ordinary working life: shared cases, shared offices and the quiet pressure of a small town.

A rival midway through

The seventh episode brings in a character who unsettles the relationship. In the eighth, the rival, Date George, tells Takoi that the two of them are people who like Shu, and a batting centre contest follows in which Takoi refuses to give way. The competition turns a steady working partnership into an open question about who stands beside the junior officer.

How it reached viewers

The Kansai local broadcast on ABC Television ran in the small hours after Sunday night, and the start times moved during the run, with episodes three and four at 0:40 and episode five at 0:25. FOD streamed each episode from the broadcast night, and TVer and ABEMA carried catch up afterwards. The ten episodes ran weekly from late July to the end of September.

The shoot

Filming lasted about one month and ended at a hot spring location, with both leads in yukata for the last scene shot. The manga source also has a sequel released in May 2026, which sits alongside the television run.

Themes

The drama sets a romance between two adult colleagues inside a working police station. Takoi is a kind detective of 38 who gets along with nearly everyone, and Shiono is an elite junior with a sharp tongue, so the pairing sets warmth against precision. Crime cases supply the weekly structure, and the feelings between the two develop around that routine instead of apart from it.

The title reverses the rule that duty comes first. The leads keep to the order only in name, and the arrival of a rival in the later episodes forces them to say what they have avoided saying. The setting, a small country station and its dormitory, keeps the stakes personal and close.

Best scenes

In the second episode the two leads share their first kiss. In the eighth episode the rival Date George challenges Takoi, a batting centre contest follows, and Takoi answers that he is the one beside Shiono now.

Interesting facts

The source manga has more than 150,000 copies in circulation, and a sequel volume was released in May 2026.

How it was made

Filming took about one month and finished at a hot spring location, where the last scene shot was an important sequence from the second half of the story with both leads in yukata.
