Chiang Jui-chih (Ray Jiang) - Taiwanese director of Wishing Upon the Shooting Stars

Chiang Jui-chih

BIOGRAPHY

Chiang Jui-chih (Chinese: 姜瑞智, also credited as Ray Jiang; born June 11, 1980 in Taipei) is a Taiwanese film and television director. He came up through the production ranks as a line producer and assistant director, including on DiDi’s Dreams (2017), before moving into directing, and won Best Drama Director at the 53rd Golden Bell Awards. He is also known for a run of government-commissioned promotional films for New Taipei City and Taoyuan that deliberately worked against the conventions of the form.

He is most commercially identified with the Gatao gangster franchise, which he has worked on in every instalment for a decade: assistant director on Gatao (2015), co-director on Gatao 2: Rise of the King (2018), then director of Gatao: The Last Stray (2021), GATAO: Like Father Like Son (2024) and GATAO: Big Brothers (2025). Several of those films passed NT$100 million at the Taiwanese box office. In 2025 he directed Marching Boys, a 1990s-set drama that went on to Golden Horse Award nominations and international festival selection.

Chiang is equally central to Taiwan’s BL industry. He directed the We Best Love series (2021), Meow Meow Boss (2021), The Amazing Grace of Σ (2022) and My Tooth Your Love (2022), the last three with producer Sammi Pan and screenwriter Lin Pei-yu, a team that has stayed together across projects. He has spoken publicly about approaching his first BL commission by studying Taiwanese, Thai and Japanese examples of the genre, and has traced his interest back to an adolescent encounter in which a boy waited four hours to give him something and be his friend, a memory that, he has said, taught him feelings are the same regardless of gender. In 2026 he directed the twelve-episode BL series Wishing Upon the Shooting Stars, in which he also appears on screen as Brother Zhong.
