BIOGRAPHY

Mason Fung Ho-yeung is a Hong Kong actor born in 2004. He trained in Choy Li Fut martial arts with his grandfather from an early age and began acting classes at the age of thirteen. He attended Baptist Lui Ming Choi Secondary School and left during Form 5 to work as an actor full time. He made his screen debut as a child performer in the sports film We Are Legends, playing the younger version of a character portrayed by Edward Ma, and also appeared in advertisements and music videos. At fifteen he played the young So Wa-wai in the 2021 biographical film Zero to Hero, a role that brought him the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Supporting Actor at the fortieth ceremony in 2022, along with a Best New Performer nomination. He went on to appear in A Murder Erased, the television series Forensic Heroes VI: Redemption, the TVB series The Taste of Us as Leung Leung, and the film The Prosecutor.

Before his first feature he went through a training academy for young performers and built up screen time in short form work, appearing in Hong Kong government promotional videos and in children's programmes on ViuTV. He came to Zero to Hero (媽媽的神奇小子) with no feature film acting experience at all, and was fourteen years old during the shoot.

He played the teenage version of the athlete So Wa Wai in Zero to Hero (媽媽的神奇小子, 2021) with no prior acting experience, and by his own production's account leaned heavily on his senior co-stars to get into the part. Sandra Ng (吳君如) took him out for hamburgers and chips and talked him through the emotional scenes, and Louis Cheung (張繼聰) demonstrated how to play a scene and explained the bond between the character and his mother.

It dates from 2024.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What preparation did Mason Fung have before his first feature film?

Very little of the usual kind. He came to Zero to Hero with no feature film acting experience at all. What he had behind him was a training academy for young performers, Hong Kong government promotional videos and children’s programme hosting on ViuTV, which is screen time rather than film craft.

Who coached him through the difficult scenes?

Sandra Ng 吳君如 and Louis Cheung 張繼聰. He was very shy at the first audition meeting and Ng put him at ease by taking him out for hamburgers and chips, then talked him through the emotional scenes. Cheung demonstrated how to play a scene and explained the bond between the character and his mother.

What did Zero to Hero bring him?

Best Supporting Actor at the fortieth Hong Kong Film Awards in 2022, and a Best New Performer nomination at the same ceremony. His co-star Leung Chung Hang 梁仲恆 was nominated alongside him in that second category for the same film, so the two competed against each other.

Where does his martial arts training come from?

His grandfather, who taught him Choy Li Fut from an early age. It is the only formal skill recorded on this profile. He also swims, having practised it for six or seven years, and has said that swimming is what trains his willpower.

Why are so many of his early credits younger versions of other actors?

Because he began as a child performer and was cast for the resemblance. His screen debut in We Are Legends in 2019 was the younger version of a character played by Edward Ma, Hello Missfortune worked the same way, and Zero to Hero cast him as the teenage version of the athlete So Wa Wai.

What did he give up in order to act full time?

School. He left Baptist Lui Ming Choi Secondary School during Form 5, in November 2021, to work as an actor full time, and enrolled in TVB’s artiste training class the following year. He has since appeared in A Murder Erased, Forensic Heroes VI: Redemption, the film The Prosecutor and, as Leung Leung, the 2024 series The Taste of Us opposite Zeno Koo.
