BIOGRAPHY
Woodie Pongchaiphat Sethanand (Thai: วู้ดดี้ พงษ์ชัยพัฒน์ เศรษฐนันท์) is a Thai cinematographer, director and producer. He directed all ten episodes of the 2026 revenge thriller Payback, which aired on One 31, and he came to directing from the camera department.
He graduated from the American Film Institute with a major in Cinematography.
His career began in 2014, when he shot Until Now as director of photography and directed the film The Couple. He then directed the series 7 Days Series (also credited as 7 Wun Jorng Wen) across thirty-seven episodes from 2015, and its second season in 2017.
In the 2020s he worked mostly as a cinematographer in the Thai BL industry. He shot Cooking Crush (2023), The Box (2023) across ten episodes, After Sundown (2023), Happiness (2025) across twelve episodes, Whale Store xoxo (2025) across ten, and Goddess Bless You from Death (2025). He also produced Sunset x Vibes (2024) across twelve episodes.
He returned to directing with Reclaim (2025), a twelve-episode series, and followed it with Payback in 2026.
Payback is a Thai, Japanese and South Korean co-production. Raize Up Production by Kiseki Creation made it with A Plan International Group, Kidari Studio and Copus Japan, and it aired on One 31 every Saturday from May 30 to August 1, 2026, with iQIYI streaming it abroad. The series follows Sun, a former debt collector turned delivery rider, who learns that his ex-boyfriend Bank has become an actor called Sunny and enters the entertainment industry to take revenge. There he meets Jay, a senior director whose own plans overlap with his. Min Thanakorn Wichanukhor and Toptap Jarukit Kaewmoonrueang lead the cast, and the screenplay is credited to Sammon and Amnard Thangsomboon with Rungrapee Kingkaew as producer.
Payback brought a Thai director together with Korean and Japanese partners on one ten-episode series.
Woodie Pongchaiphat Sethanand directed Payback for Raize Up Production by Kiseki Creation, with Aplan International Group, Kidari Studio, Copus Japan and Fuji Television Network. Kidari Studio is the Korean studio behind the source webtoon, Payback (Manhwa).
In 2025 he worked on four series: he directed Reclaim and shot Happiness, Whale Store xoxo and Goddess Bless You from Death.
His credits fall into two directing periods with a camera period between them. The directing work of 2014, 2015 and 2017 led off with The Couple and the thirty-seven-episode 7 Days Series. The years from 2023 then belong mainly to the camera: three shoots in 2023, a producing credit in 2024 and three more shoots in 2025. Only after that stretch did he direct again, with Reclaim and Payback in consecutive years. Episode orders show the same movement, from thirty-seven episodes in his early series to ten, twelve and ten in the later ones, so the later directing work is tighter in length than the first.
To my eye, Woodie’s career is unusual because it moves in both directions between the lens and the monitor. A cinematographer who returns to directing tends to think in frames first, and I would watch for that in Payback. I would start with Reclaim and then Payback, because they show the same director working on two different kinds of story.
