BIOGRAPHY
Kota Kagami (Japanese: 各務孝太; born May 2, 1997 in Nagoya, Japan) is a Japanese-Taiwanese actor who works primarily in the Taiwanese industry. He was born and raised in Nagoya and attended elementary school in Japan through the sixth grade before his family relocated to Taichung so that he could learn Chinese; he later attended high school in Taiwan and the family eventually settled in Taipei.
His father had wanted to be an actor in Japan but gave the ambition up, and Kagami has said in interviews that pursuing an entertainment career was in part a way of completing it for him. While still in high school he was recruited by an older student for a television segment featuring high-school newcomers, and afterwards joined the training programme Star Group Project, rehearsing daily from the afternoon until three in the morning.
His film work includes We Are Champions (2019) as Ting Kuo-Feng, When Green Turns to Gold (2019) as Kimura, Bin Bin (2020) and Fly Me to the Moon (2024). In television he appeared in Fly the Jumper (2020) as Lee Wenjing and then in the BL series Lesson in Love (2022), where he played Sato Takita across twelve episodes. In 2026 he joined the Taiwanese BL series Wishing Upon the Shooting Stars as Aomi Hamaguchi, credited in the drama’s Chinese-language storyline as Xiao Hai, appearing in all twelve episodes. He is fluent in Japanese and Mandarin Chinese.
Wishing Upon the Shooting Stars premiered on Thursday, March 26, 2026 on LINE TV in Taiwan, with twelve episodes of roughly thirty to forty minutes each and Ray Jiang as director. The story follows He Xiang-yong, a young man who loses his job in Taipei, returns to his hometown on an island and wishes not to be recognised. The wish comes true, and he goes by the name Zhong Xiao-you while he rebuilds contact with his father and his old friends and Chen Hao-wei comes back into his life. Jed Chung plays the adult Xiang-yong and Chu Meng-hsuan plays Hao-wei, while Kagami joins the supporting players beside JN Yu as Li Wan-zhe, Aiko Fang as Xi Xi and Andy Wu as Brother Hong.
Kota Kagami plays a Japanese character in Wishing Upon the Shooting Stars, a Taiwanese production.
Two independent production houses made the series under director Chiang Jui-chih, and it streams on GagaOOLala, Viki, iQIYI and YouTube.
His credits run in a clear line from Taiwanese youth cinema to boys’ love. Two films arrived in 2019, We Are Champions as Ting Kuo-Feng and When Green Turns to Gold as Kimura, then Bin Bin and the series Fly the Jumper as Lee Wenjing in 2020. His first boys’ love series was Lesson in Love in 2022, where he played Sato Takita across twelve episodes, and he came back to the genre four years later as Aomi Hamaguchi, again across twelve episodes. Both boys’ love parts carry Japanese names, so the language he grew up with in Nagoya and the Mandarin he learned in Taichung each have a place in the work.
In my view, the training years he describes explain the shape of this career better than any single title does. Someone who rehearsed until three in the morning as a teenager tends to build a list of credits slowly and steadily, and that is what his list looks like. If I were choosing where to start, I would take Lesson in Love first, the earlier of his two boys’ love series, so that his later part can be read as a step forward from it.
