Ryo Sato
BIOGRAPHY
Ryo Sato (佐藤玲; born 10 July 1992) is a Japanese actor and producer, known to BL audiences as Fujisaki Nozomi (藤崎希), the colleague who quietly carries a torch for Adachi, in TV Tokyo’s Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! (2020) and its sequel film Cherry Magic! THE MOVIE (2022).
Sato was born in Tokyo. She has said that being turned down for a national beauty pageant as a primary-school pupil pushed her towards acting, on the reasoning that performance offered something appearance alone could not. She attended the junior and senior high school attached to Ochanomizu University and went on to graduate from the Department of Theatre Arts at Nihon University’s College of Art.
Her training was firmly in the theatre. After the company Act Aoyama she joined Saitama Next Theatre, the young ensemble led by the director Yukio Ninagawa, as a third-intake member. Ninagawa cast her in the daughter role in his 2012 staging of Hi no Ura Hime Monogatari, alongside Shinobu Otake and Tatsuya Fujiwara, and that production is counted as her professional debut.
Screen work followed quickly. She took her first leading film role in Obake (おばけ, 2014) and won the Actress Award at MOOSIC AWARDS 2014 for it. Her subsequent credits include Shojo (2016), her first regular television role in ON (2016), Kakuho no OL Nikki (2017), Donten Town (2020), Cool Doji Danshi (2023) and Threads of Blue (2023).
In January 2023 she left Théâtre de Poche, the agency that had represented her for most of her career, and in March that year founded her own production company, R Plays Company, describing its mission with the phrase “producing connections”. She now works both in front of the camera and as a producer. The Cherry Magic drama and its 2022 film sequel are catalogued on BLGLFLIX as separate title records, and she is credited as supporting cast on both.
