Leong Siew-hong — Malaysian screenwriter and director, Fragrance of the First Flower

Leong Siew-hong

BIOGRAPHY

Leong Siew-hong (Chinese: 梁秀紅, also credited as Chris Leong Siew Hong) is a Malaysian director and screenwriter, born in Kuala Lumpur, whose work since 2017 has moved between Malaysian independent cinema and Taiwanese television.

She wrote and directed the short film Blind Mouth (Bisu), which was nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the 54th Golden Horse Awards in 2017. In the same year she took a writing credit on the Malaysian feature Shuttle Life. She wrote and directed Like Father, Like Daughter (2019) and Family Day (2021), and wrote Do Not Go Gentle in Taipei (2021). A further screenplay, Running Wild, has no release date yet.

Her girls’ love credit is Fragrance of the First Flower (第一次遇見花香的那刻), the Taiwanese drama made by Long Moment Films with GagaOOLala. It ran six episodes from 12 November 2021 and returned for a twelve-episode second season between 18 February and 25 March 2025, carried on Netflix as well as GagaOOLala. She is credited as a writer on that second season.

Her more recent work has been Taiwanese long-form television. She wrote and directed all eight episodes of the PTS crime series Tabloid (死了一個娛樂女記者之後), broadcast between 8 February and 1 March 2025, and she is a credited writer on The Producer (接招吧!製作人), a twelve-episode music-industry drama that began on HBO Max on 28 August 2026 and is still airing.

Leong Siew-hong, a Malaysian filmmaker, wrote for the twelve-episode second season of Fragrance of the First Flower.

Her earlier Golden Horse nomination came in 2017 for Blind Mouth, a short she wrote and directed herself, and her 2025 crime series Tabloid was also written and directed by her.

The calendar of early 2025 holds an overlap. Tabloid aired from 8 February to 1 March, and the second season of Fragrance of the First Flower began on 18 February and ran to 25 March, so two series carrying her name were on screen together for roughly two weeks, one a PTS crime drama and the other a girls’ love series on GagaOOLala and Netflix. Her list also has a clear change of medium. Blind Mouth, Shuttle Life, Like Father, Like Daughter, Family Day and Do Not Go Gentle in Taipei are films, while Fragrance of the First Flower, Tabloid and The Producer are television series, with the series all dated 2021 or later. Her writing on The Producer, which began on 28 August 2026 and is still airing, extends that run into a third broadcaster, HBO Max.

In my view her record is unusual for how often she keeps writing and directing together. Blind Mouth, Like Father, Like Daughter, Family Day and Tabloid all carry both jobs, while on Fragrance of the First Flower she writes for another director, Wang Yi-ling.

What stayed with me is the range between a short film nominated at the Golden Horse in 2017 and an eight episode crime series in 2025, both written and directed by her. I would start with Fragrance of the First Flower for the genre link and then watch Tabloid to see her directing.
