BIOGRAPHY
By Blue (Thai: น้ำเงิน นามสมมุติ) is the pen name of the Thai author of 23.5, the Girls’ Love novel published in print by everY, the Girls’ Love imprint of Jamsai, and adapted in 2024 into 23.5 the Series, GMMTV’s first Girls’ Love production.
An official English edition was released as an e-book on 4 April 2023, credited to น้ำเงิน นามสมมุติ and TULIP, under the title 23.5 When the Earth is Spinning Around. The Thai edition comes from the same publisher. The series adaptation premiered on GMM 25 on 8 March 2024, twelve episodes, directed by Kanittha Kwunyoo and written by the three-person team of Naphat Chitveerapat, Lalil Kittitanaphan and Nichaphat Buranadilok.
What the title means
The number in the title refers to the tilt of the Earth’s axis, which is about 23.5 degrees, and the Thai title, 23.5 องศาที่โลกเอียง, spells the idea out as the degrees at which the world leans. The English edition keeps the image of the planet in its subtitle, and the series carries it on screen through the online name of its lead character.
The story on screen
The series centres on Ongsa, a shy transfer student played by Pansa Vosbein, who befriends Sun, one of the most popular girls at her new school, through social media, where she goes by the pseudonym Earth. The misunderstanding begins when she carelessly wishes Sun sweet dreams under that account. Pattranite Limpatiyakorn plays Sun. The supporting cast includes Benyapa Jeenprasom, Rutricha Phapakithi, Chayapol Jutamas, Thanaset Suriyapornchaikul, Kittipat Chalaragse, Wanwimol Jaenasavamethee, Allan Asawasuebsakul and Preeyaphat Lawsuwansiri.
The twelve episodes ran on Fridays from 8 March 2024 to 24 May 2024, each about fifty two minutes, and were carried on GMM 25, the GMMTV YouTube channel and Netflix. From first episode to last, the run spans exactly eleven weeks. It is classified as a youth comedy romance set in a school.
Two companion programmes followed the series. One is a single special episode of cast and director interviews, and the other is a twelve episode behind-the-scenes series that follows the making of the drama.
The book came first
The English e-book went on sale on 4 April 2023 and the series premiered on 8 March 2024, eleven months later.
The publisher had a dedicated Girls’ Love list even earlier. everY is an imprint built for the category inside Jamsai.
A Girls’ Love novel from a dedicated imprint became GMMTV’s first Girls’ Love series.
In my view the most satisfying thing about this pair of works is how the central device travels from page to screen without losing its point. A pen name sits on the cover of the book, and an invented online name drives the plot of the series, so the question of who is speaking under which name runs through both.
The pen name น้ำเงิน นามสมมุติ translates roughly as “Blue, a pseudonym”, and it is the only name under which the author publishes. The book reached international readers through an official English e-book before the series aired, which let readers abroad meet the story nearly a year before the broadcast. If you are choosing where to begin, I would start with the series for its pace and then read the book to see what a three person writing team chose to keep.
