What happens

Chotto Matou yo, Harutora-kun (ちょっと待とうよ、春虎くん) is the Japanese Boys' Love manga by Amekiri that the 2026 MBS drama adapts. It began as a one-shot in Shinshokan's Dear+ and was extended into a serial after readers responded to it, running from the November 2021 issue to the January 2025 issue and collected in two Dear+ Comics volumes.

Kishida Sui is a second-year at a boys' boarding school. Since the people around him found out he is gay, he has kept himself safe by playing the boy everyone teases: laughing along, letting things pass, keeping a face mask on. It works, in the sense that nothing worse happens.

Then the spring room reassignment puts a first-year named Kurobe Harutora in with him. Harutora is direct in a way Sui has no defence against, and he does not treat the joke as a joke. The manga is about what happens to a coping strategy when somebody refuses to play along with it, and the second volume follows the two of them after they are already together, through another round of room changes.

The pairing turns the usual school senior and junior arrangement around: the younger boy is the settled one, and the older boy is the one who finds himself looked after.

A drama CD was produced in 2023, with Kenji Kasai as Sui and Ryota Suzuki as Harutora, before the live-action series arrived in 2026.

Before You Read

  • What it is: the Dear+ manga by Amekiri that the 2026 MBS drama Hold on, Harutora-kun adapts.
  • It began as a one-shot. Reader response is what turned it into a serial, which is why the first volume reads as a complete story on its own.
  • Serialisation: Dear+, November 2021 issue to January 2025 issue.
  • Two volumes from Shinshokan under the Dear+ Comics label: Volume 1 on 3 October 2022 (ISBN 9784403668364) and Volume 2 on 1 April 2025 (ISBN 9784403669811).
  • Volume 2 is post-getting-together. It picks up with Sui and Harutora already a couple and puts the room assignment back in play, so it is a continuation rather than a retelling.
  • Drama CD first, live action second: the drama CD came out on 27 October 2023 with Kenji Kasai as Sui and Ryota Suzuki as Harutora; the MBS series followed in 2026.

A two-volume story about getting in front of the joke.

Sui is not closeted, he is out and managing the aftermath, and the coping strategy the manga is interested in is the one where you get in front of the joke so nobody else gets to make it. That is a harder thing to draw than a secret, and it is what gives the first volume its shape.

Harutora works because he is written as literal rather than heroic. He does not rescue Sui from anything; he just does not accept the premise that the teasing is funny, and the story lets that be enough.

What to expect: a short read, two volumes, with the first structured like a self-contained story because it was one before it became a serial. Volume 2 is a continuation of a couple already together.

Read it if you are watching the MBS drama and want the version with the interior monologue, or if you want a school BL that is about self-protection rather than secrecy. Reading it means the Japanese Shinshokan volumes.

Three years of magazine issues produced two volumes and two adaptations.

Amekiri's story ran in Shinshokan's Dear+ from the November 2021 issue to the January 2025 issue, reaching two collected volumes. A drama CD followed on 27 October 2023, more than a year before the serial finished, so the audio version was built from a text that was still running.

The MBS live-action series arrived in 2026, a year after the last magazine instalment, and is covered at Hold on, Harutora-kun. Three formats reached audiences across a five year span, in the order print, audio, screen.

The two volumes give two different kinds of reading. The first is an arrival story, built to end where it stands. The second is an aftermath story, which watches a couple who have already found each other and asks what the habits of a lifetime do once they share a room. A reader can stop after the first volume without leaving anything hanging, or go on for the second and see the pair a step further along.

Shinshokan supplied the magazine, the label and the collected volumes, so the whole work sits inside two books.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Did this manga begin as a one-shot?

Yes. Amekiri published it as a one-shot in Shinshokan's Dear+ and it was extended into a serial after readers responded, running from the November 2021 issue to the January 2025 issue. It is collected in two volumes under the Dear+ Comics label.

What does the second volume cover?

It returns to a couple already together and puts the room assignment back into play, so the question shifts from whether Sui can be reached to what he does with his habits once somebody has reached him.

Is there a drama CD version?

Yes, released on 27 October 2023, between the two collected volumes and before the live-action adaptation. That makes three formats for the same story: the Dear+ serial and its books, the audio drama, and the 2026 MBS series.

Where can the manga be bought?

Shinshokan's own product pages cover both volumes. The books are the Japanese editions.

How does the manga differ from the 2026 drama?

The drama adds original scenes written for the screen rather than carried over from the two volumes, a point Amekiri singled out when discussing the adaptation. The manga is the shorter and more contained version of the same story.

Where a title can be read, and who is credited on it, may have changed since publication, as our disclaimer explains.

Themes

The first volume was a finished object before it was a beginning. A one-shot has to close inside its own pages, so a story about a boy whose method is postponement was originally required to arrive somewhere on demand, and only afterwards granted the room to keep going. The second volume then uses its extra space to return to a couple already together and put the room assignment back into play, so the question shifts from whether Sui can be reached to what he does with his habits once somebody has reached him.

Shinshokan's own cover copy describes the pair as a straightforwardly devoted junior boy and a considerate mask boy. That phrasing files the mask under good manners rather than fear, and it names the trap: Sui's self-protection is indistinguishable from thoughtfulness, so it earns approval from the people around him.

How it was made

Shinshokan's product page for the first volume presents the book as Amekiri's second collected volume, which places this story early in the artist's published run. The two books were priced at 924 yen in October 2022 and 913 yen in April 2025, the second running 256 pages in B6 format.

The two and a half year interval between the collected volumes covers most of the Dear+ serialisation, which ran until the January 2025 issue.
