Liu Yu-ren, the Taiwanese actor who plays Wu Dawei in the BL series Connecting to You

Liu Yu-ren

BIOGRAPHY

Liu Yu-ren (劉育仁, born 19 April 1995) is a Taiwanese actor with nine credits, most of them in Taiwanese cinema, and his most recent is one of the two leads in a Boys’ Love series.

He appears as Chang in Detention (返校), the 2019 Taiwanese film adapted from the video game, set in a 1960s high school under martial law where a group of students and teachers have been running an illegal book club. The same year he played Teng-Tzu in the basketball drama We Are Champions (下半場). He went on to Summer (野夏天) in 2022, the Malaysian and Taiwanese co-production See You at the Rally (我和我的賽車老爸) in 2023 as Ethan Su, and Marching Boys (進行曲) in 2025 as Liu Chih-chuan, a film set in 1992, five years after Taiwan lifted martial law, about a student who joins his school’s marching band against his family’s plans for him. On television he appeared in the four-episode MyVideo series Fly the Jumper (違反校規的跳投) in 2020.

In August 2026 he took one of the two leads in Connecting to You (整個世界,只有你連上了我), playing Wu Dawei, a police officer. The series is adapted from a web novel and built on a premise in which a man sees emotional bonds between people as coloured threads, and finds that the first thread he can see leading to himself belongs to a cop. It ran thirteen episodes made by GrX Studio with Force Films, and it reached audiences through five services at once: Viki, GagaOOLala, MyVideo, friDay Video and iQIYI International.

BLGLFlix editorial view

There is a thread running through his filmography that is invisible if you only count the BL. Detention is set in a school under martial law in the 1960s. Marching Boys is set in 1992, five years after martial law was lifted, and is about a student choosing music over the future planned for him. Two of his films are about Taiwan’s authoritarian period and what came after it, and his newest work is a Boys’ Love series distributed openly across five platforms. No political argument should be built out of one actor’s credits. It is worth noting simply that a filmography can hold that shape in Taiwan and could not hold it in most of the territories whose BL this site covers.

The distribution on Connecting to You is worth recording in its own right. Viki, GagaOOLala, MyVideo, friDay Video and iQIYI International, all carrying the same thirteen-episode series. Compare that with much of the Chinese-language BL in this catalogue, where a single Taiwanese platform, GagaOOLala, is often the only route to an international audience. A Taiwanese production gets five doors; a mainland one frequently gets one. That is not a claim about quality, it is a description of where these shows are allowed to be sold. It is also why a database of Chinese-language queer drama that does not watch GagaOOLala closely will miss most of it.

On him personally the record is unusually complete for this site: a date of birth, a place of birth, an IMDb identifier, three photographs. What it does not carry is any biography at all, no agency, no Wikidata item, and no confirmed social account. So this page can tell you when he was born and what he has been in, and almost nothing about how he got there.

TRIVIA

Two of his films are set around Taiwan’s martial law period. Detention takes place in a 1960s school under it, and Marching Boys in 1992, five years after it was lifted.

Detention, in which he plays Chang, is adapted from a video game and is one of the better-known Taiwanese films of the last decade.

Connecting to You was carried by five services at the same time: Viki, GagaOOLala, MyVideo, friDay Video and iQIYI International. Most Chinese-language BL reaches an international audience through one platform, if any.

His first two credits, Detention and We Are Champions, were released four weeks apart in August and September 2019.

See You at the Rally is a Malaysian and Taiwanese co-production, which makes it the only credit on his record made outside Taiwan.

TMDB records two further films for him, A Love Story Before Dawn and Most Wanted, with no release date at all, so we cannot say whether either has come out.

Born 19 April 1995, one day before that year’s cusp into Taurus, and after the Lunar New Year of 31 January, which puts him in the year of the Pig.
