What happens

Popular Serizawa Acts Weird around Me (Japanese: 陽キャ集団にいる芹沢は、俺の前だと様子がおかしい, Yokya Shudan ni Iru Serizawa wa, Ore no Mae da to Yosu ga Okashii) is a Japanese youth comedy drama in the boys' love genre. It began on Monday 10 August 2026 in the late night Drama DiVE slot of Yomiuri TV, airing weekly at 25:29, and the series has 10 episodes. TVer offers free catch up after each broadcast.

It is adapted from the novel by Yuzu Tsubaki, illustrated by Howako and published under the BeLuck Bunko label of Starts Publishing. Tsubaki also wrote Minato Shoji Coin Laundry. Subaru Yamashita writes the scripts, three directors share the episodes, Ryo Kawasaki, Koichiro Oyama and Takeshi Shioguchi, and the production company is The icon.

The premise starts with a manuscript. Suzuki Hajime (鈴木創) is a loner who loves boys' love stories and writes fiction of his own. Serizawa Haruto (芹沢遥人) is the most outgoing and best looking member of a cheerful group of friends. When Serizawa reads what Suzuki has written, the drama turns on the way he behaves in front of Suzuki, which is the oddness named in the title. In the sixth episode, broadcast on 14 September, Serizawa's friends hold an emergency meeting at a family restaurant.

Koizumi (小泉光咲) plays Suzuki and Shisaka (四坂亮翔) plays Serizawa. Kaiki Kimura plays Takeuchi Tomoaki (竹内知明), Shotaro Tanaka of DXTEEN plays Saeki Yuma (佐伯裕真), and Yuki Hayama plays Iwasaki Shun (岩崎俊). The opening theme is 愛愛愛なんて by Ryugujo (龍宮城), and DXTEEN performs the ending theme, a new song written for the drama.

A title that describes one behaviour

The Japanese title is a full sentence: Serizawa, who belongs to the cheerful group, acts oddly when he is in front of me. It names the narrator, the group and the oddness in one line. The word weird is attached to a single person's conduct toward a single other person, so the whole drama is set up as a puzzle about why one man acts differently around one other. The English title keeps that structure.

A story that starts with writing

Suzuki loves boys' love stories and writes fiction himself, so the drama belongs to the genre it also portrays. The event that sets it moving is a reading: Serizawa reads the manuscript. That makes reading, and not an announcement or a meeting, the starting point of the story.

A cast member and the ending song

One of the cheerful friends on screen belongs to the group that closes each episode. Shotaro Tanaka, who plays Saeki Yuma, is a member of DXTEEN, which performs the ending theme, a new song written for the drama. Ryugujo performs the opening theme, 愛愛愛なんて.

The friends around Serizawa

Kaiki Kimura plays Takeuchi Tomoaki and Yuki Hayama plays Iwasaki Shun, completing the cheerful group beside Saeki. Their emergency meeting at a family restaurant in the sixth episode, on 14 September, gives the friends a hand in the plot as well as a place in the background.

An author with an earlier television credit

The source author, Yuzu Tsubaki, also wrote Minato Shoji Coin Laundry, which was made into a television drama. The book comes from the BeLuck Bunko label with illustrations by Howako.

How it airs

Yomiuri TV carries the drama in its Drama DiVE slot on Monday nights at 25:29, from 10 August 2026, and TVer offers free catch up after broadcast. The run is 10 episodes. Subaru Yamashita writes the scripts, three directors share the episodes, and The icon produces.

Themes

The story begins with a piece of private writing being read. Suzuki keeps his fiction to himself, and the moment Serizawa reads it, the situation shifts from hiding to being seen. The drama uses that exposure as its engine, and much of its comedy comes from how differently one person behaves in a crowd and in front of one other person.

The cheerful group of friends around Serizawa is part of the structure. The friends react to what they see, so the series is as much about a social circle watching a change as about its two central characters. The official description calls the series a non stop youth comedy, and the pace of its half hour episodes fits that label.

Interesting facts

  • Shotaro Tanaka of DXTEEN appears in his first regular television drama, and his group performs the ending theme.
  • Yomiuri TV publishes a preview for each episode, and the versions alternate between the opening theme and the ending theme.
  • Digest videos covering episodes 1 to 4 and episodes 1 to 7 are on the broadcaster's official channel.

How it was made

The first 60 second promotional video was released on 27 July 2026, two weeks before the premiere. The opening theme is released through Sony Music Labels, and the ending theme through UNIVERSAL SIGMA and LAPONE ENTERTAINMENT.
