Satoko Okazaki

BIOGRAPHY

Satoko Okazaki (Japanese: おかざきさとこ; born March 6, 1982) is a Japanese screenwriter and novelist signed to Queen-B, and the second writer on TV Tokyo’s Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! (2020), where she wrote episodes 5 and 6 alongside lead writer Erika Yoshida.

Okazaki was born in Tokyo and graduated from the Faculty of Sociology at Meiji Gakuin University. She writes her professional name in hiragana, おかざきさとこ, rather than in kanji, and her agency renders it that way on its own profile page. Queen-B also represents Erika Yoshida.

Her earliest credit is the WOWOW drama Doyoubi wa Living de (土曜日はリビングで, 2010). Manga and light-novel adaptation became the spine of her career from there: the MBS tie-in drama for TIGER & BUNNY (2012), Detarame Hero and Real Onigokko: The Origin (2013), Donten ni Warau (曇天に笑う, 2014) and its drama-CD side stories, and Otokomizu! (男水!, 2016). She also wrote an instalment of the Toto Nee-chan spin-off strand for NHK in 2016 and, again for NHK, the series PTA Grandpa! in 2017.

From 2019 she became a regular hand on TV Asahi’s long-running comedy-drama Kaseifu no Mitazono, writing for series three and four, and again for series seven. The rest of her recent list runs across networks and streamers: Tadashii Rock Band no Tsukurikata, Amazon’s FOLLOWERS and Cherry Magic itself in 2020; Konin Todoke ni Han o Oshita Dake desu ga, Keishicho Sosa Ikkacho season 5 and Akuma to Love Song in 2021; Saishu Ressha de Hajimaru Koi and Anata ga Shite Kurenakute mo in 2023; and Uri o Yaru and the live-action My Dress-Up Darling in 2024. Alongside the scripts she has published prose fiction, including novelisations of Ore wa, Sensee Nanka ja Nai! and the film Haru Matsu Bokura (both 2018) and of Cherry Magic itself in 2021, and she has written dramatised audio and stage-reading pieces.

Much of her work is counted in single episodes rather than whole series. She wrote four episodes of Doyoubi wa Living de (5, 7, 9 and 10), episode 19 of the TIGER & BUNNY tie-in, episode 8 of Detarame Hero, four episodes of Real Onigokko: The Origin (8 to 11) and four of Donten ni Warau (3, 4, 8 and 9). On Kaseifu no Mitazono she wrote episode 4 along with episodes 7 and 8 of the third series in 2019. She added episodes 3 and 8 of the fourth in 2020, then the opening episode of the seventh in 2025.

Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! aired in TV Tokyo’s MokuDra 25 slot from 9 October to 24 December 2020, twelve episodes with two further episodes released through a streaming service on the final date. Hiroki Kazama, Hiroaki Yuasa and Masataka Hayashi directed, and Sumika Horiguchi composed the music. Eiji Akaso plays Kiyoshi Adachi, the office worker who gains the power to hear thoughts by touch, and Keita Machida plays his colleague Yuichi Kurosawa. The film followed on 8 April 2022.

Satoko Okazaki wrote two episodes of a manga adaptation and then published its novelisation.

The 2020 series adapted a manga for television. Okazaki wrote episodes 5 and 6, and in 2021 she published the novelisation of the drama. Prose returned to the page after the screen version, under the hand of one of its credited screenwriters.

What stayed with me on her list is how often the starting point is someone else’s pages, from manga and light novels to a film, and how clearly her own hand still shows. The Cherry Magic novelisation is the plainest case: after writing two episodes she wrote the book of the series too. For a first taste I would watch her two Cherry Magic episodes, then turn to an episode of Kaseifu no Mitazono to see how she handles broad comedy.

She has no credit on Cherry Magic! THE MOVIE (2022), which was written by Riko Sakaguchi.
