Naoto Asahara
BIOGRAPHY
Asahara Naoto (Japanese: 浅原ナオト) was a Japanese author of literary boys’ love (BL) fiction. He wrote the source novel for the 2026 MBS drama The Boy and I Who Will Break Up in 100 Days, the last work published in his lifetime.
He worked as a company employee while writing, and began serializing fiction on KADOKAWA’s Kakuyomu web-novel platform in October 2016. His debut published novel, Kanojo ga Suki na Mono wa Homo de Atte Boku de wa Nai (2018), was adapted into the NHK drama Fujoshi, Ukkari Gay ni Koku. (2019), screenplay by Naoyuki Miura. His other works include Okachimachi Kaguya Nights, #Tsukamori Yuta ga Login Shitara, and Konya, Moshi Boku ga Shinanakereba (2021).
His final novel, 100-nichi-go ni Wakareru Boku to Kare (The Boy and I Who Will Break Up in 100 Days), was published by KADOKAWA on May 19, 2023. He died on July 16, 2023, in Tokyo, at the age of 38, only weeks after the novel’s release. The 2026 television adaptation followed his death.
Two of Asahara Naoto’s novels reached television, and the same screenwriter adapted both.
Naoyuki Miura wrote the screenplay for Fujoshi, Ukkari Gay ni Koku. on NHK in 2019 and again for The Boy and I Who Will Break Up in 100 Days in 2026.
The first adaptation aired the year after the debut novel was published, and the second arrived three years after the author’s last book.
His working life also shows one company on both ends of the route from screen to shelf. The serial fiction began on Kakuyomu, which belongs to KADOKAWA, and KADOKAWA is also the publisher of the debut novel and of the final one. From October 2016 to the final novel in May 2023 the writing spans roughly six and a half years, with a named book in 2018, another in 2021 and the last in 2023, so the published titles arrived at intervals of about two to three years. The two broadcasters differ as well: the public channel NHK carried the first adaptation, and MBS the second. The same writer of the screenplays links two different networks, seven years apart.
In my view, the striking thing about this body of work is its reach relative to its size. A handful of novels, written while he held a day job, produced two television adaptations and an author credit that now sits at the head of a six episode series. I would point a new reader to the 2019 NHK drama first, because it adapts his debut novel, and then to the 2026 series as the work that closes the list.
