What happens

Yi-Ming (Zaizai Lin) is raising her son largely alone while her husband works away from home, and years of distance have worn her marriage down to routine and quiet disappointment. She does not expect a friend's wedding to change anything. Then she sees Ting-Ting (Lyan Cheng) across the room, the woman she was quietly, intensely in love with years earlier, before both of them were steered onto safer, more conventional paths by family, timing, and fear. The reunion is brief and polite on the surface, but it reopens a door Yi-Ming had spent a decade keeping shut. In the days after the wedding, the small, dutiful shape of her adult life starts to feel less like a given and more like a choice she never consciously made.

As Yi-Ming and Ting-Ting begin seeing each other again, old tenderness comes back faster than either of them is ready for, and it arrives alongside real fear. Taiwan has just become the first place in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, and the headline turns an abstract, safely hypothetical question into something Yi-Ming can no longer avoid: what would it actually mean to choose this life, in the open, instead of quietly grieving it. People close to her, including Ren-Xiu (Yi Lee), notice the change in her and react with a mix of concern, curiosity, and quiet pushback. Yi-Ming has to weigh her son, her marriage, her reputation, and a long-buried sense of who she actually is against a feeling for Ting-Ting that never fully went away, no matter how carefully she tried to bury it.

The story picks up again years later, after Yi-Ming and Ting-Ting have already been pulled apart once. Yi-Ming is now divorced, sharing custody of her son Xiao-Zhe, and rebuilding a life on her own terms when a chance discovery, Ting-Ting fronting a band rehearsing for a festival show, pulls the two women back into each other's orbit. An old, half-forgotten promise from long ago gives them a reason to see each other again, but neither approaches it as a clean second chance. Older, warier, and acutely aware of what a second failure would cost them both, Yi-Ming and Ting-Ting have to work out whether the love that survived one separation can survive being chosen out loud a second time.

Fragrance of the First Flower won Best Leading Actress and Best Writing at the 57th Golden Bell Awards, and its second season, arriving just over three years after the first, keeps faith with that start. This is a genuinely well-built story about two women who let each other go once and now have to decide whether to risk it again.

A Love Story That Grew Up With Its Audience

Season 1 begins with its central couple already adult, already partly settled into lives that don't include each other, and lets the reunion at a wedding feel less like a spark and more like an old wound reopening. Zaizai Lin's performance as Yi-Ming, a mother stretched thin by a marriage running on autopilot, earned her the Best Leading Actress award, and it's easy to see why: the show trusts her to carry long, quiet scenes without over-explaining what she's feeling.

Season 2 raises the degree of difficulty by picking the story back up after a breakup rather than building toward one, following a now-divorced Yi-Ming and a Ting-Ting rebuilding her own life around her music. It's a braver structural choice than a straightforward continuation.

What Works

  • The series treats Taiwan's same-sex marriage legalization as lived context rather than a headline the characters stop to discuss, letting the politics live inside Yi-Ming's private choices instead of a speech.
  • The Golden Bell recognition for both writing and acting shows in the craft on screen, particularly in how much the quiet scenes are allowed to carry.
  • Its festival run, including Series Mania, BFI Flare and the Tokyo International Film Festival, took a specifically Taiwanese story to audiences well beyond Taiwan.

What to Know Going In

Season 2 comes after a gap of just over three years and follows Yi-Ming and Ting-Ting as they are now, so returning viewers pick up in a different place from where they left off. The show favours emotional realism over romantic sweep, which suits viewers who like their love stories grounded.

Final Score: 8.4/10

Season 2 of Fragrance of the First Flower became the first GagaOOLala original licensed to Netflix for streaming across Asia.

It launched on 18 February 2025 simultaneously on GagaOOLala worldwide and on Netflix in Asia, with twelve half-hour episodes. Leong Siew-hong, Ting-Ning Chen and Pi-ying Yang wrote the series with director Teng I-han, working from no source book.

Netflix added Season 1 on 8 February 2025, ten days before Season 2 began, so viewers in Asia could start from the beginning just before the new season arrived.

The two seasons are built on different scales. The first has six episodes of about twenty minutes released from 12 November to 10 December 2021, and the second has twelve, released two at a time on Tuesdays between 18 February and 25 March 2025, so the later part of the story is twice as long as the first and arrives as six weekly double bills. Teng I-han directed the first season and Yi Ling Wang the second, working from notes on the characters and objects of the earlier run to keep the two parts continuous.

Eighteen episodes of about 29 minutes come to roughly 8.7 hours in all, a length that lets the story cover both a first separation and the long return. It suits viewers who like grown-up romances about second chances and who are content to let quiet scenes carry most of the weight.

Themes

The Mandarin title names a moment rather than a relationship: the instant of first meeting the scent of flowers. Scent is the perception that leaves no record. It cannot be photographed, filed or produced as evidence, and it is also the one that can return uninvited years after the fact. For a woman whose adult life is documented in full, a marriage, a child, a custody arrangement, a shared address, building the story on the one sense that documents nothing is a precise choice.

The legalisation behind the first season works on the same principle of cost. While the law said no, Yi-Ming's silence could be described as impossibility. Afterwards the sentence changes from cannot to will not, and the series is interested in the exact point at which an excuse expires and a person has to look at what was underneath it.

Season two then makes Ting-Ting a performer, which quietly answers a problem the first season set. Two women who lost each other by going quiet can only find each other again by one of them becoming audible in public.

Interesting facts

  • Season 1 was Taiwan's first title in the Short Forms Competition at Series Mania, in 2021.
  • At the 57th Golden Bell Awards, the series won in both the writing and the leading actress categories for miniseries and television films.

How it was made

Portico Media, the parent company behind GagaOOLala, set out the second season's terms when it announced the premiere in February 2025. Yi Ling Wang directed, with Ai Chung as director of photography, and the season was set for a simultaneous launch on GagaOOLala worldwide and on Netflix in Asia.

Wang described the preparation as archival rather than inventive, with the team going back through each character and through the objects and symbols of season one so that filming and scriptwriting stayed in step.

The announcement also names public backing for the season from Taiwan's Ministry of Culture through its Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development, from the Hakka Affairs Council, and from the Taiwan Creative Content Agency's Creative Content Development Program.
