Hello Stranger

Hello Stranger is an eight-episode Philippine boys' love web series from Black Sheep Productions, directed by Petersen Vargas and written by Patrick Valencia. It went out on YouTube and Facebook between 24 June and 19 August 2020, with episodes running from sixteen to twenty-seven minutes, and the dialogue moving between Filipino and English. The series later reached iWantTFC, and Netflix Philippines added it on 10 May 2021.

Two students at Adamson University are put in the same group for a school project while classes are running remotely. Mico Ramos is diligent, anxious and long accustomed to carrying more of the work than his share; Xavier de Guzman is a basketball player with a reputation for coasting, and the pairing looks on paper like a straightforward disaster for the person who cares about the mark. Because nobody can meet in person, the collaboration takes place entirely over scheduled calls, and the two of them end up talking about a good deal besides the assignment. Kookai Yambao, Seph Policarpio, Junjun Sandico and Crystal Santos make up the rest of the group and the wider circle, each with their own reasons for watching what is happening between the other two, and the group chat stays busy throughout.

Black Sheep Productions is the youth-facing label whose output reaches viewers mainly through free web platforms rather than cinemas, and the release pattern here reflects that: no paywall, no subscription, weekly uploads on services already open in every browser. The series was made inside the restrictions rather than around them. Its setting is the remote semester every Philippine student was living through in mid-2020. A sequel feature, Hello Stranger: The Movie, followed on 12 February 2021 through pay-per-view services including KTX and iWantTFC, moving the story from a free platform to paid ones.
