Kang Woo
BIOGRAPHY
Kang Woo (강우) is a South Korean director and screenwriter whose six credited works, made between 2016 and 2024, are all Boys’ Love. Five of the six were produced by STRONGBERRY, the studio that has been making Korean BL since 2017.
He began in October 2016 with I Don’t Care (아이돈케어), a fifteen-minute film about a man named Goh Su-mi who makes a queer film out of his own life and is met with cynicism for it, and who decides to carry himself with dignity anyway.
The following year came Long Time No See (롱타임노씨), which he directed and co-wrote, and which was released in two shapes on the same day, 23 November 2017: an eighty-minute film and a five-episode web series on NAVER TV. Two contract killers, working under the names Flying Dagger and Wild Dog, fall for each other while each hides what he does, and when the truth surfaces they end up running from their own employers. It was STRONGBERRY’s first production.
Three short films followed, all for STRONGBERRY with Matchbox: Some More (썸모어, 2018), twenty-seven minutes, in which a man worn out by the city breaks his leg on a long cycle ride and is taken in at a farmhouse; Secret Roommate (수상한 동거, 2020), twenty minutes, in which a couple have to pass themselves off as flatmates when a younger brother turns up unannounced; and Sweet Curse (달콤한 저주, 2021), thirty-one minutes, a ghost story that turns on jealousy between friends.
His most recent credit is Blossom Campus (블러썸 캠퍼스, 2024), a six-episode campus romance between a music student working part-time and a member of the taekwondo club, made by Matchbox with STRONGBERRY.
At eighty minutes, Long Time No See is the longest of Kang Woo’s six works, and it is a Boys’ Love film about two hitmen in love.
Four of his six titles are short films of fifteen to thirty-one minutes. The eighty-minute Long Time No See and the six-episode Blossom Campus are the longer exceptions.
The premises change from title to title: a hitman romance, a rural convalescence, a farce about hiding a relationship from a younger brother, a ghost story and a campus romance.
In my view, the most telling thing about his list is how well it divides by running time, since each title asks the viewer for a different amount of attention. I would begin with I Don’t Care, the quickest way into his work at fifteen minutes, and keep Long Time No See for an evening when there is time for the full eighty.
What I appreciate is how often he builds a story from an ordinary place, a farmhouse, a shared flat, a library, a campus, and lets the situation carry the characters. That is my reading as an editor, a viewpoint and not a claim about his intentions.
