I’m a Fool for You

Four years is long enough for three people to become strangers. Hugo (Owan Tam), Hin (Pius Kung) and Yiu (Bowie Guan) were inseparable at secondary school and then lost each other entirely after graduation, and when Hong Kong throws them back together by coincidence, each has grown up in a direction the other two know nothing about. What has not aged is everything that was never said at school. That surfaces first, and the new conflicts arrive on top of it.

The real subject is what happens to an adolescent friendship once the people inside it have changed separately. Shared history turns out not to survive automatically, and affection and resentment become very hard to pull apart. With four episodes of roughly eight to eleven minutes there is no room for plot machinery, so the season is built out of a handful of conversations and confrontations, and the pressure sits entirely in whether any of the three will be honest about what he wants from the other two. The production signalled the shape before a frame of it aired, posting three separate character introduction videos, one each for Hugo, Hin and Ah Yiu: a triangle, announced as a triangle.

This is Hong Kong web BL in its purest form. Omnia Thought (黑黑思想) wrote, shot and posted the series free to its own YouTube channel with Chinese and English subtitles, releasing it fortnightly across 14 and 28 January and 11 and 25 February 2021, then licensed it onward to GagaOOLala once there was an audience. It kept going: season two in mid-2021, season three across five Fridays in 2022, season four from December 2024 into January 2025, with the same three actors throughout and 4K flagged in the episode titles themselves from season two. The labelling shifted too, from 耽美 on the season one uploads to 港產BL劇 on everything after, which says something about how the team came to pitch what it was making. Four seasons across four years makes it one of the longest-running Hong Kong BL properties outside broadcast television, in a period the Chinese University of Hong Kong's Centre for Cultural Studies records as driven by exactly this kind of independent maker.
