One episode of key animation on SPY x FAMILY, then a director’s chair on an eight episode BL short. That is not a demotion and it is not a fluke. It is what a directing debut looks like in Japanese animation, where six minute BL ONAs are one of the few places a new director gets to run a production at all. The names on a credit list this small are the entire crew, which is the same fact we recorded on the Chinese side, where one person held ten jobs on a seven episode series. Different country, different mechanism, same underlying condition: queer material is where people get their first go.

The structure around this title is worth spelling out because it is the most vertically arranged thing on this site. The manga is serialised on ComicFesta. The anime’s streaming release sits on AnimeFesta. Then it goes to Tokyo MX and BS11 in a separate television edit. One brand carries the story from a phone screen to a broadcast slot without ever leaving its own house, and the eight episode, six minute format is not an artistic choice so much as the shape that fits between the two.

Set that against the rest of the region and it is the closest analogue to what GagaOOLala does in Taiwan, where the platform finances what it distributes. Japan got there first and got there through publishing. Thailand does it through studios and terrestrial channels, Korea barely does it at all, and China does it by making the whole thing one person’s job. Four answers to the same question of who pays for queer stories, and only one of them, the Thai one, looks like ordinary television.

The last detail is the two release versions. A premium streaming cut and a standard broadcast cut, three weeks apart, is why our sources disagree about when this anime started, and it is worth understanding rather than tidying away. Japanese BL anime is routinely made in two forms for two audiences with two different tolerances. A database that records only one date is describing only half of what was released.
