SYNOPSIS

Love Beneath the Stars is a six-episode Philippine boys' love series, also billed as The Boy Foretold by the Stars the Series, written and directed by Dolly Dulu and co-produced by Dreamscape Entertainment with Clever Minds Inc. It streamed on iWantTFC from 16 August to 20 September 2021, with episodes of around thirty minutes. The project was announced on 2 February 2021, a little over a month after the film it continues.

The story resumes where the feature stopped. Dominic Benjamin Fuentes Cruz and Lucas John Armada are together, more or less, and now have to keep a relationship running inside an all-boys Catholic school that has no procedure for one. Classmates who tolerated a rumour respond differently to a fact. Teachers who could ignore it no longer can. The boys' families arrive with their own positions: Faye, Dominic's mother, played by Agot Isidro, and Luke's mother, played by Nikki Valdez, want different things and neither of them wants this. Mark, the coach, played by Victor Silayan, occupies the ambiguous space between the institution and the pupils. Baby R, the fortune teller who set the whole thing in motion, returns.

What the series does, and the film could not, is stay in the aftermath. A feature has to end at a decision; six episodes can sit with what follows one. The move to iWantTFC also changed the audience: the film reached viewers through a festival, while the series arrived as ordinary subscription programming, the same route as any other title on the service.

The direction of travel is worth noting on its own. Most screen boys' love in this catalogue begins as a series and, if it succeeds, acquires a film. Here the film came first and the series followed, which meant the production had a known cast, a proven pairing and a finished first act before it wrote a single episode. That is an unusual position for a Philippine BL title of this period to start from.

EDITOR’S VERDICT

6.5/10

Reviewed by Renkaze, editor of BL & GL Flix

A sequel that inherits a strong lead performance and a weaker script than the one it follows, made at series length by a team working faster than before.

What carries over

Adrian Lindayag and Keann Johnson are better together here than in the film. The early awkwardness between the two performers has gone, and the second and third episodes contain the most relaxed material either of them was given across both productions. Iyah Mina's Baby R is used sparingly and well.

The adult casting is a genuine upgrade. Agot Isidro gives Faye a weariness that stops the character becoming a symbol of parental disapproval, and Nikki Valdez plays a mother whose objections are practical rather than moral, which is both less familiar and more uncomfortable to watch.

Where it falls short

Six episodes of thirty minutes is three hours, and the series does not have three hours of story. Episodes four and five in particular circle: a confrontation is set up, deferred, restated, then deferred again. The school's opposition is established clearly in the first episode and then developed very little, so the middle of the run repeats a position rather than testing it.

There is also a tonal inheritance problem. The film could be broad and sentimental because it was a Christmas festival release; the series aims for something more serious and does not fully commit, so comic beats land in scenes that had been building towards something else.

Victor Silayan's coach is underwritten. The character is positioned as significant and given too little to do with the position, which leaves a thread hanging at the end of the final episode.

The school as antagonist

The strongest sequences are the smallest. A change of seating plan, a question asked in front of a class, a corridor that becomes harder to walk down: the series is good at showing how an institution applies pressure without anyone ever issuing an instruction. Those scenes are better than the confrontations the script eventually builds towards, which are more conventional and considerably louder.

Verdict

Worth watching if the film worked for you, and unlikely to convert anyone it did not. It is the more mature of the two productions in what it is trying to say and the less satisfying in how it says it. The decision to keep the story inside the school rather than sending the couple somewhere easier is the right one, and the series does not quite have the material to sustain it.

Final Score: 6.5/10

What Love Beneath the Stars is about

Continuations of romance stories have a structural problem. The first work ends when two people admit something, which is also the point at which the engine driving it stops. A sequel has to find a new source of tension without inventing a betrayal or a third party, and most reach for one or the other.

This one goes to the institution instead, and that is the right choice for the material. A Catholic school is not a person who can be argued with or won over; it is a set of rules, timetables and expectations enforced by dozens of people who each believe they are being reasonable. Dominic and Luke are not fighting a villain. They are trying to occupy a space that was designed on the assumption they do not exist, and the series is patient about the specific forms that takes: where they can sit, what a teacher will and will not say, which friends stay.

Bringing in two experienced actresses to play the mothers is the clearest sign of what the production wanted. Agot Isidro and Nikki Valdez are not decorative casting; they anchor the half of the story that happens away from school, where the pressure is quieter and harder to answer. A parent who is disappointed rather than angry is the more difficult opponent, and the series knows it.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I need to see the film first?

Yes, in practical terms. This picks up after The Boy Foretold by the Stars and assumes the audience knows how the couple got here. That film is held as a separate record on this site.

Why does it have two names?

It is billed both as Love Beneath the Stars and as The Boy Foretold by the Stars the Series. The two refer to the same six episodes.

How long is it and where did it stream?

Six episodes of about thirty minutes, on iWantTFC between 16 August and 20 September 2021. Unlike several titles here it was not released free on YouTube.

Which cast members return?

Adrian Lindayag as Dominic, Keann Johnson as Luke and Iyah Mina as Baby R all continue from the film. Agot Isidro, Nikki Valdez and Victor Silayan join for the series as Dominic's mother, Luke's mother and the coach.

Who wrote and directed it?

Dolly Dulu, as with the film, for a co-production between Dreamscape Entertainment and Clever Minds Inc.

Is it based on a novel?

No. It continues a screen story whose origin was Dulu's college play, and no prose source exists for this part of it.

How does it compare with the film?

It is quieter and more confined. The film had a festival release, a broader comic register and a prophecy to unfold; the series stays inside the school and the two families, and puts its weight on the consequences of a decision already taken.

Is the story finished?

The six episodes were released as a complete run and nothing further has followed. Whether the ending closes the story or leaves room is a matter of reading rather than of announcement.
