My Day the Series is a twelve-episode Philippine boys' love web series produced by Oxin Films and directed by Xion Lim. The longest of the 2020 Philippine boys' love titles by some distance, and the one that would have benefited most from being shorter.

What works

The workplace material is specific and often good. Service scenes have a real sense of pressure, the supporting staff behave like people with jobs rather than like an audience for the leads, and Mark Alvero's Chef Galang is a genuinely useful presence: an authority figure who is neither an obstacle nor an ally, just someone with a restaurant to run.

Miko Gallardo is the more assured of the two leads and does well with a character written largely in the negative. Sky spends the first several episodes withholding an explanation, and Gallardo keeps him watchable while the script refuses to supply one.

What does not

Twelve hours is far too long for this story. Episodes run a full sixty minutes and are padded to get there: conversations that restate what has already been established, scenes that exist to reach a cliffhanger, and a middle section where very little is added between episodes five and nine. Uploading each hour in four parts compounds the problem, since the natural rhythm of a scene keeps being broken by an upload boundary.

The power dynamic is the more serious issue. The series wants the early antagonism read as repressed feeling, but Sky is Ace's supervisor and the antagonism takes the form of professional mistreatment. That is not examined; it is simply dropped once the tone changes. Viewers sensitive to workplace-hierarchy romance should know this going in.

Technically the production is basic. Sound in the kitchen scenes is frequently poor, and the lighting varies noticeably within single sequences.

The pairing

Aki Torres has the more sympathetic role and the shakier performance. Ace is written as endlessly patient, which gives the actor very little to push against, and across twelve hours the patience begins to read as passivity rather than character. The chemistry between the two leads arrives late and is real when it does; a sharper edit would have brought it forward by several episodes and lost nothing.

Verdict

Historically the most consequential of the smaller 2020 titles, because Oxin Films used it as a foundation rather than an experiment. As a viewing experience it is shapeless and overlong, with a strong lead performance and a premise the writing does not interrogate. Worth knowing about; harder to recommend watching end to end.

What My Day the Series is about

Putting a romance in a professional kitchen is not a neutral choice. A kitchen is a hierarchy with a physical layout: who stands where, who calls out, who is permitted to touch what. Every relationship in it is already defined by rank before anybody has a feeling about anybody, and a trainee's day consists largely of being corrected by the person immediately above him. The series uses this well in its first third, because it means Ace and Sky cannot avoid each other and cannot speak freely either.

That structure also creates the problem the series never really solves. Sky is Ace's supervisor. His unpleasantness is exercised through a position of authority, and the hostility the story later reframes as attraction was, for several hours of screen time, an older colleague making a junior's working life difficult. Where a school or a shared flat would put the two on level ground, a kitchen does not, and the series is not especially curious about that imbalance once it decides the two men are in love.

The sixty-minute format is the other thing worth noting. At that length, released free on YouTube, the series is asking for twelve hours of an audience's attention from a production with none of the resources that would normally justify it. That the run was completed at all says something about how quickly the Philippine format found viewers willing to give it.
