What happens

17th Spring (ใบไม้ผลิปีที่ 17) follows Marn, a boy who was born with HIV, which was passed to him by his mother at birth. Because of the discrimination around the condition he grows up apart from other people, yet he keeps an optimistic outlook. After the death of his grandmother he goes to live with an uncle and transfers to a new school.

There he meets Than, whose full name is Thanthara Sindhupan, a rebellious student with a painful past of his own. Marn tells Than about his HIV status openly. From that point the two boys come to understand each other, and each begins to bring out the best in the other.

The narrative covers Marn's life from early childhood up to the age of seventeen, the age named in the title. The school years therefore sit at the end of a longer arc instead of making up the whole story, and the people who shaped his first years, the grandmother and the uncle, stay part of the picture even after he walks into a classroom full of strangers and has to decide how much of his own story to share with them.

Aston Ratiphat Luengvoraphan plays Marn and Chokun Puttipong Jitbut plays Than, in a boys' love drama set among school friends and family.

A story told through one number

The title names an age, and the story is built to arrive at it. Marn's life is followed from early childhood to seventeen, so the school years that most teen dramas treat as the entire story become the last chapter of a longer one. That ordering gives the number a structural job rather than a decorative one. A premise that stretches over so many years leaves less room for campus scenes than a standard school romance does, which means each stage of Marn's life has to earn its place on screen.

One conversation at the centre

The drama rests on a single exchange. Marn tells Than about his HIV status openly, and Than, a student who is himself hard to approach, answers by understanding instead of pulling away. In many school stories a secret is something a character is afraid to lose. Here the disclosure comes early, and the open question is what two people do once nothing is hidden between them.

Care taken with the subject

Aston Ratiphat Luengvoraphan has said the team recognises the importance of portraying HIV awareness correctly, and director New Siwaj Sawatmaneekul has said the production is working with the original author to keep the story accurate and respectful. The messages the team has described include the difference between HIV and AIDS and the fact that people living with HIV can stay healthy with proper treatment. A premise like this depends on that accuracy, because the story asks the audience to see Marn first as a boy and only second as a diagnosis.

A pairing with a history

Marn and Than are played by two actors who already know each other's rhythm. Aston and Chokun were both in the main cast of Boys In Love and again in the short Hearts in Play, so this is their third production together and the first where they carry the story between them. Familiar partners can make a quiet scene easier to stage, and a story built on one confession in a school corridor leans heavily on exactly that kind of ease.

Whatever shape the full series takes, the premise already sets out the terms: a boy who keeps his optimism, a classmate who keeps his guard up, and seventeen years of life behind the title.

Themes

Stigma and isolation set the starting point. Marn grows up apart from other people because of the discrimination around his condition, yet the premise gives him an optimistic outlook, so the story is about how he lives rather than about what he lacks.

Friendship carries the second theme. Than's own painful past gives him a reason to understand Marn, and the two boys each bring out the best in the other. Family is the third: a grandmother who has died and an uncle who takes Marn in frame the years before school.

Interesting facts

  • The name Ryu appears twice across the connected cast: Chokun played Ryu in Hearts in Play in 2025, and Titan Chayuth Gorsurat plays a different Ryu in 17th Spring.
  • Hearts in Play, the earlier short series that Aston and Chokun made together, has six episodes of about three minutes each, roughly eighteen minutes in all.

How it was made

GMMTV included 17th Spring in its 2026 line-up showcase, Magic Vibes Maximized, and a pilot had already been completed by then. GMMTV is the production company, and the story is adapted from the web novel by Littleskyofme.
