Chermchey (Web Novel)

Chermchey (เฉิ่มเชย; RTGS: Choem Choei) opens on the worst week of Eung’s life. The young Thai narrator has just caught his boyfriend cheating, and the relationship he had organized his whole routine around collapses overnight. Friends push him to leave the country rather than sit in the wreckage, so he books a solo trip to Taipei with no plan beyond distance. A visit to a local temple puts him in the path of Intha, another Thai traveler who is impossible to miss: eye-catching vintage clothing, an orange monk's bag slung over one shoulder, and an unbothered calm that Eung finds faintly ridiculous. His first impression is not flattering, and he says so to himself at length.

What should have been a passing encounter keeps repeating. Taipei is a large city, but their paths cross again, and the stranger Eung had already written off turns out to be steadier and funnier than the outfit suggested. The novel follows the two of them through the ordinary business of a shared trip, temples, night markets, long walks, meals eaten first in silence and then not in silence, and lets the wary distance between them thin out one conversation at a time. Because everything is filtered through Eung's first-person narration, the shift registers first as irritation, then as curiosity, then as something he is not ready to name. The stakes stay personal rather than dramatic: the obstacle is not a rival or a family ultimatum but Eung's own suspicion that trusting anyone again is simply a repeat of the mistake he just made. Intha, for his part, is never in a hurry, which is exactly what makes the question harder to avoid.

Written by Nottakorn (นทกร), Chermchey was first serialized in 28 chapters on the Thai fiction platform Tunwalai and completed in 2020, drawing several hundred thousand reads and a near-perfect reader rating long before any adaptation was announced. It was later published as a single-volume book by Deep, an imprint of Satapornbooks, and released on Mebmarket in Thai and in an official English-language e-book translation. In tone the book sits closer to a travelogue than a melodrama, trading incident for interiority: the humor is self-aware, the pacing is unhurried, and the healing arc is allowed to stay awkward. That texture is also what separates it from ChermChey, the 2026 Thai television adaptation produced by Copy A Bangkok and Domundi TV, which relocates the central romance to Thailand and reworks several plot details for the screen. Read before or after the drama, the original remains the fullest version of Eung and Intha's story.
