What happens

Still 2gether picks the story up after the pretend arrangement has become something real. Tine Teepakorn and Sarawat Guntithanon are now second-year university students, played again by Win Metawin Opas-iamkajorn and Bright Vachirawit Chivaaree, and the question is no longer whether they are together but how they stay that way while the rest of campus life carries on around them. The story keeps its source: it is still the Thai novel by JittiRain, so the continuation grows out of the same pages rather than being invented for television.

The new complication is practical. Tine and Sarawat each lead a university club, and the two clubs practise next to each other. Their rehearsals compete for the same space and attention, so the couple face the small, repeated friction of being rivals in public and partners in private. The supporting group returns with Dim, Earn, Green, Phukong, Pear, Type and Fong, played by Sivakorn Lertchuchot, Rachanun Mahawan, Korawit Boonsri, Thanatsaran Samthonglai, Pattranite Limpatiyakorn, Jirakit Kuariyakul and Thanawat Rattanakitpaisan.

Still 2gether is a five episode continuation, aired on GMM 25 and LINE TV every Friday from 14 August 2020 to 11 September 2020 and produced by GMMTV. It continues the same source, the Thai novel Because We Belong Together by JittiRain, rather than starting a new story.

The ending theme is Yang Koo Gun, sung by the two leads together, which carries over the habit of the first series of tying the soundtrack to the actors. The story concluded in the 2021 film 2gether: The Movie.

Still 2gether is a short season and it is written like one. Five episodes is less than half of the thirteen in the first series, and the story reflects that: it has one new situation, two clubs sharing a practice space, and it keeps returning to that situation instead of introducing a second one. The result is tighter than a typical sequel, because nothing is there to fill time.

The timing is worth noticing. The first series ended on 15 May 2020 and this one began on 14 August 2020, which is exactly thirteen weeks later. Both ran on Fridays. So the gap between the two was a single quarter of a year, and anyone who watched the first series live could pick up the second within the same year, with the same actors and the same characters one year older in the story.

What I would point out is the choice of conflict. The first series was driven by a pretend relationship; this one is driven by a real one, and the friction comes from the couple’s public roles, not from the relationship itself. That makes it a good test of whether you wanted more of the pair or more of the premise: if the pretend arrangement was the draw, this will feel quieter, and if the pair were the draw, it delivers exactly that.

If you are new to it, watch 2gether: The Series first, because the sequel takes the first series’ ending for granted. Then give Still 2gether one sitting; five episodes is an evening and a half, and the film that closes the story follows in 2021. A practical note for anyone planning a rewatch: the three installments run thirteen episodes, five episodes and one 107 minute film, so the whole story fits in a long weekend, and this middle part is the quickest of the three to finish.

Interesting facts

  • The new conflict is two university clubs that practise side by side.
  • The ending theme Yang Koo Gun is sung by both leads.
  • It aired on GMM 25 and LINE TV, the same channels as the first series.
  • Phukong, Type and Fong are named in the cast of this continuation, played by Thanatsaran Samthonglai, Jirakit Kuariyakul and Thanawat Rattanakitpaisan.
  • The two leads sing the ending theme together, where in the first series Bright sang the ending alone.
