What happens

2gether: The Movie is the feature film that closes the story of Tine Teepakorn and Sarawat Guntithanon. Win Metawin Opas-iamkajorn and Bright Vachirawit Chivaaree return in the roles they played across 2gether: The Series and Still 2gether, and the film gathers the same circle of friends around them: Green, Dim, Earn and Pear, played by Korawit Boonsri, Sivakorn Lertchuchot, Rachanun Mahawan and Pattranite Limpatiyakorn.

It runs for 107 minutes and was released in 2021, first in Japan and later in Thailand. The film is credited to The One Enterprise and GMMTV, with three directors named on it: Weerachit Thongjila, Noppanat Chaiwimon and Khanitha Kwanyu. It is based on the same Thai novel as the series, Because We Belong Together by JittiRain, and it is the last installment of the three.

The shape of the release matters for how the film reads. It is the third of three installments, which means it assumes the viewer already knows the pair, and it serves as the point where the story that started as a pretend relationship in 2020 reaches a conclusion on a larger screen. The cast list in the credits runs well beyond the leads, and the friends who gather in the series around Tine and Sarawat are the same group who return here.

The two leads were recognised for the film: at the Thailand Actors Award in Japan in 2021, Bright was named Best Actor and the pair were named Best Couple.

The first thing to say about 2gether: The Movie is that it is a farewell, and it knows it. A film that arrives after thirteen episodes and a five episode continuation has no reason to explain itself, and it does not try. It trusts the audience to arrive already attached, and that makes it a different kind of title from a standalone film.

The release order is the detail I would highlight. The film reached Japan in June 2021 and Thailand in November 2021, so viewers in Japan saw the ending first and Thai viewers who followed the series from the broadcasts saw it five months later. The Thailand Actors Award in Japan the same year, Best Actor for Bright and Best Couple for the pair, belongs to the same picture: this story had a real following in Japan by the time the film opened there.

It also shows an unusual credit structure: three directors are named. The first, Weerachit Thongjila, directed the original series, so the film keeps a link to the people who made the first installment while adding two further names. What stayed with me is that this makes the film feel like a continuation of a team, not just of a cast.

If you are new to the story, do not start here. Watch 2gether: The Series and Still 2gether first, then give the film its 107 minutes. It is the right ending for people who finished the first two and the wrong beginning for anyone who has not. At 107 minutes it is a single evening, so plan it as its own sitting rather than a follow on episode, and keep the earlier installments fresh in mind, because the film does not stop to recap the story of the pretend arrangement that began it.

Interesting facts

  • The film came out in Japan five months before it reached Thailand.
