Fake Fact Lips (Manga)
SYNOPSIS
Fake Fact Lips (フェイクファクトリップス) opens on a rivalry that has already outlasted most friendships. Ryo and Zen have been competing since high school over everything two teenage boys can possibly compete over, from grades and sports results to the tally of Valentine's chocolates, and neither has ever been willing to concede a single round. Years later, both grown into polished, high-performing salesmen, they discover they have landed at the same company in neighbouring divisions. The old scoreboard comes out within minutes.
After yet another petty defeat, the two end up drinking together and admitting the one thing neither of them can win at: romance. Both are hopeless at it. The confession curdles, as everything between them does, into a wager, and the terms are simple enough to be dangerous: whoever makes the other fall in love first takes the round. What follows is a courtship performed entirely in bad faith, all staged tenderness and calculated gestures, carried out by two men who are flawless in a sales meeting and completely out of their depth the moment feeling enters the room. The comedy comes from how hard each of them works to win. The ache comes from how quickly the performance stops feeling like one. Pride is the real obstacle here rather than circumstance, because admitting attraction would mean losing, and losing to this person in particular is unthinkable. The art holds the same tension, snapping between broad comic exaggeration during the sparring and sudden stillness whenever one of them slips.
Written and illustrated by Suehiro Machi (末広マチ), Fake Fact Lips was serialized in Takeshobo's Qpa magazine, under the Bamboo Comics Qpa Collection line, from 2020 to 2021, then collected as a single 226-page volume in June 2021. Seven Seas Entertainment released the complete story in English as a single large-trim edition in 2025, and licensed Japanese digital storefronts such as cmoa carry it as well. A direct two-volume sequel, Fake Fact Lips BREAK (Takeshobo, 2023), picks the couple up after they get together and brings in jealousy, distance and a third party to test what the bet began. The original volume's popularity also led to the 2026 Japanese live-action drama of the same name, starring Kaito Hori and Yusuke Sato, which stays close to Suehiro Machi's plotting and tone while giving the story room the compact manga never asked for.
