What happens

Theory of Love follows a group of third-year film students, and at its centre is one quiet piece of self-restraint. Third, played by Atthaphan Phunsawat, known as Gun, has kept his feelings for his close friend Khai to himself for three years. He finally decides to move on, and that is the moment Khai, played by Jumpol Adulkittiporn, known as Off, starts showing interest in him.

The series turns on that timing. A feeling that has been hidden for years becomes harder to hide the moment it looks like it might be returned, and the film school setting gives the friends constant reasons to be in the same room. The supporting cast includes Two, Bone, Aun and Paan, played by Nawat Phumphotingam, Chinnarat Siriphongchawalit, Pirapat Watthanasetsiri and Sara Legge, with Neen Suwanamas also in the cast.

Theory of Love ran for twelve episodes on GMM 25 and LINE TV, from 1 June 2019 to 17 August 2019, and it was produced by GMMTV and directed by Nuttapong Mongkolsawas. It is adapted from the novel of the same name by JittiRain. A special episode titled Stand By Me followed on the GMMTV YouTube channel.

The ending theme is Pra-ek Jam-long, known in English as Fake Protagonist, by Getsunova, and the series won the LINE TV Awards in 2020 for Best Couple and for Most Hearted Content of the Year.

What I notice first about Theory of Love is that its drama is almost entirely internal, and the series has to find ways to show it. Third has a secret and the secret has a number: three years. A number that specific gives the audience a clock to read the story by, and everything he does in the early episodes, from the way he stays in the friend group to the way he avoids saying anything, is measured against it.

The release pattern is simple and worth noting. Twelve episodes from 1 June to 17 August 2019, one every Saturday, ran for eleven weeks with no gap. Both dates fall on a Saturday, so the series was a weekly appointment from its first episode to its last. The special episode, Stand By Me, sits outside that run and was released on the GMMTV YouTube channel afterward.

The awards are the part that tells you how the pairing landed. The LINE TV Awards named Gun and Off Best Couple in 2020 and gave the series Most Hearted Content of the Year. That is two prizes for the same thing from two angles, one for the pair and one for the series as a whole, and it fits a premise built entirely on one relationship.

There is a structural point in the cast too. The two leads are the two ends of the central friendship, and the supporting names, Two, Bone, Aun and Paan, are the rest of the film school group around them, so the series always has the rest of the friend group in the room when the secret is at stake. That keeps the tension on Third, because every scene has a witness.

If you are new to it, start with Theory of Love alongside Gun’s page and Off’s page, because the pairing is easier to read when you know where each actor’s list goes next. Then watch the special episode, Stand By Me, which is the natural coda to the twelve.

Interesting facts

  • A special episode, Stand By Me, was released on the GMMTV YouTube channel after the series.
  • Third has kept his feelings for Khai to himself for three years before the story starts.
  • The ending song, Fake Protagonist, is by Getsunova.
