SYNOPSIS

Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! (Japanese: 30歳まで童貞だと魔法使いになれるらしい; abbreviated CheriMaho) is a 2020 Japanese boys' love (BL) romantic comedy, the original live-action adaptation of Yuu Toyota's (豊田悠) manga. Directed by Hiroki Kazama and written by Erika Yoshida, it aired on TV Tokyo's late-night MokuDra 25 block from October 9 to December 24, 2020, across 12 episodes plus two streaming-exclusive specials.

It stars Eiji Akaso as Kiyoshi Adachi, a shy 30-year-old office worker who, having never had sex, wakes on his birthday with the power to hear people's thoughts by touch, and Keita Machida as Yuichi Kurosawa, his handsome, popular co-worker. The cast also features Kodai Asaka as Masato Tsuge, Yutaro as Minato Wataya, Takuya Kusakawa as Yuta Rokkaku, and Rei Sato as Nozomi Fujisaki.

When Adachi accidentally brushes against Kurosawa, he is stunned to discover that his admired colleague is deeply in love with him. As he fumbles with Kurosawa's startlingly sincere feelings, Adachi slowly realises how much he is valued, and begins to fall in return, in a gentle, wholesome workplace romance about insecurity and being seen.

Featuring the opening theme "Ubugoe" by Omoinotake and the ending theme "Good Love Your Love" by DEEP SQUAD, the series became a landmark, breakout international BL hit. It went on to inspire a 2022 live-action film, a 2024 anime, a 2025 stage musical, and a 2023 Thai remake, and is licensed for international streaming on Crunchyroll.

EDITOR’S VERDICT

8.5/10

Cherry Magic! (2020) is rightly considered one of the warmest, most beloved BL dramas ever made — a tender, low-conflict office romance that turned a quirky mind-reading premise into pure comfort viewing.

The Pairing

Eiji Akaso's anxious, self-effacing Adachi and Keita Machida's impossibly kind Kurosawa have era-defining chemistry; the mind-reading device is used to surface sincerity rather than melodrama.

What to Expect

  • Pure comfort: sweet, wholesome, low-stakes romance.
  • Genre-defining: a template many later BLs follow.
  • Faithful warmth: keeps the manga's gentle spirit.

The Verdict

An essential, feel-good classic; Cherry Magic! (2020) is one of the easiest recommendations in all of BL.

Editorial draft score: 8.5/10
