What happens

Bad Buddy starts with two families that live next door to each other and have never got along. Pat, played by Pawat Chittsawangdee, known as Ohm, is the slacker of the pair, and Pran, played by Korapat Kirdpan, known as Nanon, is the neat, careful one. They have spent years competing, and the series follows what happens when the competition stops being the whole of their relationship.

The central question is the one in the Thai title, which can be read as just friends. The two cannot stay just friends, and the story is about how that comes to light for each of them, with their own friends watching. The supporting group includes Pa, Ink, Wai and Korn, played by Pattranite Limpatiyakorn, Pansa Vosbein, Jitaraphol Potiwihok and Sattabut Laedeke, and the cast also lists Pahun Jiyacharoen, Teepakron Kwanboon and Thakorn Promsatitkul.

Bad Buddy ran for twelve episodes on GMM 25 and WeTV, from 29 October 2021 to 21 January 2022, with a broadcast slot on Fridays and an uncut version later in the evening. It was produced by GMMTV, directed by Aof Noppharnach Chaiyahwimhon and adapted from the novel Behind The Scenes by Afterday and -West-.

The soundtrack carries three named songs, Just Friend? and Our Song by Nanon and Secret, a song by Kacha Nontanun. The series collected a WeTV award for Best of Thai Series, the PCA 2021 prize for Best Thai Drama, the Kazz Awards 2022 prize for Best Couple and the Content Asia Awards 2022 prize for Best LGBTQ+ Programme.

The first thing I noticed about Bad Buddy is that its title is also its thesis. The series is about two people who are treated as bad for each other by the people around them, and it spends twelve episodes checking whether that is true. The premise gives the story a simple moral shape and then lets the characters complicate it, which is the right way round for a rivals to lovers drama.

The release data is tidy. Twelve episodes ran from 29 October 2021 to 21 January 2022, a Friday premiere and a Friday finale, which is twelve consecutive weeks with no break. The channel gave it a regular evening slot and an uncut version later the same night, so the audience that wanted the full episode did not have to wait for streaming.

What stayed with me is how much of the series lives in its songs. The lead sings two of the three named songs, and one of them won Best Theme Song at the 27th Asian Television Awards in 2022. That makes Bad Buddy one of the few titles where a lead actor’s singing is part of how the series is remembered rather than a side feature.

The awards list gives a second angle. WeTV named it Best of Thai Series, PCA gave it Best Thai Drama in 2021, the Kazz Awards gave Best Couple in 2022 and Content Asia gave Best LGBTQ+ Programme the same year. The prizes cover three different questions: is it a good series, is the pair good, and is it good for its category.

It also sits next to Theory of Love in an obvious way: both are twelve episode GMMTV series adapted from novels, from 2019 and 2021. If you are new to Bad Buddy, start with it and then read Nanon’s and Ohm’s pages, since both actors’ lists take different routes afterward.

Interesting facts

  • Nanon sings Just Friend? and Our Song for the series.
  • The official trailer is on the GMMTV channel.
  • The Thai title can be read as just friends, which is the question the story keeps asking.
