What happens

GAP (ทฤษฎีสีชมพู, Pink Theory) is the Thai Girls' Love novel by Chao Planoy that Idol Factory adapted into a 2022 series. The author self-published it, and an official English edition of 941 pages was released as an e-book on 14 January 2022.

Mon has admired Sam since Sam helped her years ago. After university she pursues a job at Sam's company and finds that Sam is cold and exacting with her.

Sam is her employer, eight years older, and descended from royalty. Gender, rank and age all stand between them, along with company rules and social class. As Mon breaks through Sam's reserve, her admiration turns into love.

The novel is long, at roughly 129,167 words in English, and much of that length goes to the working relationship between the two women: an office where Mon now works for the person she once admired from a distance. Mon's side of the story starts from a single encounter years earlier, which the book then tests against the colder woman she meets at work.

Chao Planoy has written for some twenty-three years, with more than a hundred titles behind the name, roughly fifty of them Girls' Love. The 2022 series was directed by Nuttapong Wongkaveepairoj and aired from November 2022 to February 2023.

Idol Factory adapted the novel in 2022 as a twelve-episode series, with Freen Sarocha and Becky Rebecca in the leads.

A self-published Girls' Love novel that became a twelve-episode series.

Chao Planoy released GAP independently rather than through a publishing house. The official English e-book appeared on 14 January 2022 through MEB. It runs 941 pages, roughly 129,167 words, which makes it a long read for anyone coming to it after the series.

The story is built on three distances: gender, rank and age. Mon is a new employee, Sam is her employer and eight years older, and Sam is descended from royalty. Company rules and social class add to the list.

Because Mon takes a job at the company of the person she admires, the office becomes the book's organising setting. Every private moment sits inside an employment relationship, so questions of rank and class are worked out through ordinary exchanges over reports, schedules and meetings, not through large gestures.

The author's range is part of the picture. Chao Planoy posted a first novel on an online writing site in 2005 and has gone on to a long list of titles, roughly half of them Girls' Love, and five of those novels have reached the screen. GAP reads as the work of someone who knows the form well and lets a slow build do the carrying.

Read it if you want the full-length version of the story behind the series. Watch first if you would rather meet the pair on screen, since the twelve-episode adaptation is the more compact telling.

It suits readers who like office romances with a clear difference in age and standing, and who enjoy a story where warmth arrives gradually and the long format gives each small shift room.

A novel released by its own author reached television within the year its English edition appeared.

Chao Planoy published the book independently, and the official English e-book came out on 14 January 2022 through MEB. Idol Factory's Thai Girls' Love series, with a screenplay by Phatphatson Warissaraphuricha, premiered in November 2022.

GAP is one of five Chao Planoy novels to reach the screen, alongside Blank, AFFAIR, US and Pluto. The series version is at GAP.

Themes

Mon's admiration for Sam began in a single encounter years before the story opens. The novel spends its opening stretch testing that picture against the woman she meets at work, which is why Sam's first scenes with her are so cold.

The workplace setting also fixes the terms of the romance. Mon takes a job at the company of the person she admires, so even the private moments take place inside an employment relationship.

The author has more than a hundred titles across some twenty-three years of writing, roughly fifty of them Girls' Love, and GAP is written from inside that body of work.

Interesting facts

  • Chao Planoy's novels Blank, AFFAIR, US รักของเรา and Pluto have also reached the screen.
  • The official English e-book holds an average of 4.87 out of 5 from 415 ratings on MEB.

How it was made

Chao Planoy began writing at nineteen and posted a first novel, รักนี้เท่ดี, on Dek-D in 2005 under the pen name ปลาน้อยร้อยชั่ง. GAP: ทฤษฎีสีชมพู is still listed under the author's Dek-D account.

The turn to Girls' Love came after a spell of writer's block. Chao Planoy chose it because the register felt นุ่มนิ่มดี, soft and gentle, rather than because it looked like an opening in the market, and describes the change as the point of finding an own voice.

The official English e-book is roughly 129,167 words across its 941 pages.
