What happens

Dark Blue Kiss follows Kao Phanuwat Chotiwat, played by Thitipoom Techaapaikhun, known as New, and Pete Phubodin Rachatraku, played by Tawan Vihokratana, known as Tay. The series is set in the world of university life and builds its story around the two of them, with Kao and Pete at the centre of every episode.

A second storyline runs alongside the main pair, and the series moves between the two instead of staying with one couple for its whole length. Chayapol Jutamas, known as AJ, plays Non, and the wider cast includes Krittapod Bunyamanee, known as Pod, Fluke Gawin and Pluem, who fill out the circle of friends and classmates around the leads.

Dark Blue Kiss was produced by GMMTV and directed by Noppharnach Chaiyahwimhon, known as Aof, who also directed Bad Buddy. It aired on GMM 25 and LINE TV, with twelve episodes from 12 October 2019 to 28 December 2019. It is adapted from the novel Dark Blue Kiss by Hideko_Sunshine.

The series is also known for its music. At the Maya Awards in 2020 it won Best Official Soundtrack, and the soundtrack is the part of the production that stands out first. Together with the two storylines, that makes the title a story told through contrast: the same university, two different relationships, and a score that ties them together.

For a viewer deciding where to begin, the main thing to know is that the series does not depend on earlier GMMTV titles. Kao and Pete are introduced from the start, the university setting is explained as the story goes, and the second storyline gives a newcomer a second way into the same world. Twelve episodes is also a manageable length for a first Thai BL series.

What stands out to me about Dark Blue Kiss is its structure. Most BL series pick one couple and follow them from the first episode to the last. This one lets a second storyline run beside the main pair, so the viewer is always comparing two relationships that start from the same place and move at different speeds. That comparison gives the story a shape that a single couple story does not have.

The casting history adds a second layer. New Thitipoom first appears as a first-year student in SOTUS: The Series in 2016, and three years later he is the lead of Dark Blue Kiss. Seeing the same actor move from a supporting place in the SOTUS faculty to the centre of a GMMTV series is one of the clearer career arcs among the Thai titles here, and it is easy to follow because both series have their own pages.

Tay and New are paired again in Cherry Magic in 2023, so this series is also the first chapter of a partnership that lasted for several years. If you have seen Cherry Magic and want to go back to where the two began working together, Dark Blue Kiss is that starting point.

The director matters too. Aof also directed Bad Buddy, and both titles have pages, so a viewer can compare how one director handles a campus setting in two very different stories. The Maya Awards win for Best Official Soundtrack in 2020 is the formal recognition of something that is audible from the opening episode: music carries a lot of the emotion here.

If you are new to it, start with Dark Blue Kiss for the two storylines and the music, then move to Cherry Magic to see Tay and New again. It is a sensible first Thai BL series for a viewer who wants a complete twelve episode story with a clear start and end.
