What happens

We Are is a sixteen-episode Thai boys' love series from GMMTV, adapted from the novel We Are…คือเรารักกัน by ภารวี and directed by Siwaj Sawatmaneekul. It aired on Wednesdays on GMM 25 and iQIYI from 3 April to 17 July 2024.

The story follows a close group of eight university friends and the four couples inside it, as they deal with the pressures of adapting to university life alongside their romantic feelings. Phum (Naravit Lertratkosum) studies engineering and Peem (Phuwin Tangsakyuen) studies fine arts, and their story begins when Phum ruins a painting Peem was working on. Toey (Kittiphop Sereevichayasawat) looks up to Q (Thanawin Pholcharoenrat). Tan (Thanaboon Kiatniran) joins the group after helping Fang (Tharatorn Jantharaworakarn) with an assignment. Pun (Poon Mitpakdee) and Chain (Marc Natarit Worakornlertsith) complete the four pairings, with Mick (Tee Teeradech), Beer (Pepper Phanuroj) and Matthew (JJ Chayakorn) among the friends around them.

Across sixteen episodes the series gives each of the four pairings its own thread while the eight friends share scenes as a group, so the story moves between private developments and the life of the circle around them. Three screenwriters, Rampha Phetchart, Utchariyakorn Sirikam and Inthira Thanasarnsumrit, adapted the novel, whose first volume is dated 24 June 2022, and the ending song, We Are Forever, is performed by Phuwin.

We Are is an ensemble romance built on a simple count: eight friends, four couples, sixteen episodes. The series takes a university friend group that is already close and lets each pairing arrive at its own speed, so the pleasure lies in how the couples overlap rather than in a single question of who ends up with whom.

How It Is Built

Each couple has a clear starting point. Phum and Peem begin with a ruined painting, Toey looks up to Q, and Tan joins the group after helping Fang with an assignment, while Pun and Chain complete the four. The soundtrack mirrors that structure: one opening track performed by all eight leads together, followed by four duets, one for each pairing, and a closing song, We Are Forever, sung by Phuwin.

Who It Suits

The series suits viewers who like friendship-centred campus romance and who are happy to follow several storylines at once. Sixteen episodes of 45 minutes come to about twelve hours, close to three hours for each couple before the group scenes are counted, which gives the ensemble room to breathe. The novel is by Pharawi, the director is Siwaj Sawatmaneekul, and the producer, Nuttapong Mongkolsawas, is also the director of GMMTV's Thai remake, Cherry Magic.

Sixteen episodes give four couples equal billing inside one university friend group.

GMMTV announced the series at its UP&ABOVE PART1 event on 17 October 2023 and premiered it on 3 April 2024, a little under six months later.

Sixteen episodes of 45 minutes add up to about twelve hours, which works out near three hours per couple before any group scene is counted, so the ensemble format asks for a different kind of attention than a single-pairing series.

Episodes aired weekly on Wednesdays at 8:30 PM Thai time on GMM 25, with iQIYI carrying the series for international viewers.

Themes

The title We Are uses the first person plural, and the closing song, performed by Phuwin, extends it to We Are Forever.

The soundtrack is laid out around the four couples. The opening track is performed by all eight leads together, followed by four duets, one per pairing: Jokester, Truth In The Eyes, Missing Me? and Hidden Love.

Interesting facts

  • The series was named among the thirteen best BL dramas of 2024 in a list published on 10 December 2024.

How it was made
