SYNOPSIS

Theemekha "Sun" Rungsapdee (Min Thanakorn Wichanukhor) collects debts for a loan shark, a job he keeps telling himself is temporary, until the night one of those debtors puts a knife in his younger brother. In the same stretch of days his boyfriend, Thanapat "Bank" Loetkraisorn (Fuaiz Thanawat Shinawatra), disappears with the money set aside for his mother's cancer treatment. Five years later Sun is delivering parcels for a living when he looks up at a billboard and finds Bank's face on it: the man who took everything from him is now a rising actor working under the name Sunny. Sun talks his way into the same entertainment agency, close enough to take it all back, and in doing so walks straight into the path of Athip "Jay" Wanitsakitphaisan (Toptap Jarukit Kaewmoonrueang), the company's unlisted managing director.

Jay's interest in the new arrival is neither professional nor accidental; he has his own history with the events of five years ago, and what forms between the two men runs on leverage and mutual suspicion long before it runs on anything warmer. Moving around them, Sky (Shogun Paramee Thesdaroon), Kajorn (Khunnote Jirapat Uttamanan) and Songphon (Moo Klot Atthaseri) each hold a piece of what really happened, and none of them is inclined to give it up cheaply, while Pavinee (Nook Suttida Kasemsant Na Ayutthaya) and Jo (Gandhi Wasuvitchayagit) fill in an industry where image is the only currency that counts. The closer Sun gets to the truth, the harder it becomes to tell his revenge apart from everything else he has started to want.

Directed by Woodie Pongchaiphat Sethanand for Raize Up Production, with A Plan International Group, Kidari Studio, Copus Japan and Fuji Television Network, the ten-episode series adapts the Korean BL webtoon Payback (페이백) by writer samK and artist Fujoking, serialised on Bomtoon and Lezhin Comics from 2 June 2021 and itself drawn from samK's web novel. It aired Saturdays at 22:30 on One 31 from 30 May to 1 August 2026, with an extended streaming edition arriving on iQIYI the same night; the two editions differ in what Thai broadcast standards allowed on air. Carried by the ToptapMinlee pairing, it is a crime melodrama first and a romance second, grief, debt, betrayal, and the price a person pays for collecting on all three.

EDITOR’S VERDICT

7.8/10

Payback is one of the few Thai BL series that deliberately walks away from the genre's comfort zone. There is no campus, no bickering roommates, no slow slide into first love. There is a debt collector whose brother is stabbed to death, a boyfriend who disappears with the money meant for a dying mother, and five years of silence before any of it gets answered. The tone is closer to a crime melodrama than a romance, and the series does not apologise for that.

What the adaptation gets right

The Korean source material is the reason this works. samK's webtoon, drawn by Fujoking and serialised on Bomtoon and Lezhin since 2021, is built on the idea that revenge costs the person taking it. Kidari Studio, the Korean studio that publishes the original, is credited on the Thai production, and it shows: the plot keeps its shape instead of being sanded down into something softer for broadcast.

The relationship at the centre is not built on affection. Sun enters Jay's orbit as a means to an end, and Jay knows it. What holds the two of them together is dependence, leverage and a shared understanding that neither is telling the whole truth. Min Thanakorn plays Sun with the flatness of someone who has already decided what he is willing to lose; Toptap Jarukit gives Jay a stillness that reads as control until it doesn't.

Where it loses its footing

Ten episodes is not enough room for the story the webtoon tells. The middle stretch sags: subplots are introduced and abandoned, and several supporting characters exist only to move Sun from one confrontation to the next. Fuaiz Thanawat's Bank, the betrayal that sets everything in motion, deserved more screen time than the script gives him.

There is also a structural problem the series did not choose. Two versions exist — the One 31 broadcast cut at roughly 70 minutes with commercial breaks, and the iQIYI streaming release at about 43 minutes. Depending on which one you watch, the pacing and the emotional register of key scenes read very differently. Viewers comparing notes are frequently talking about two different shows.

Series or manhwa first?

If you have not read the webtoon, watch the series first. The adaptation compresses heavily, and knowing the source makes the omissions louder than they need to be. If you have read it, go in expecting an abridged retelling rather than a faithful transfer — the emotional beats survive, the connective tissue does not.

The verdict

Payback is an ambitious, uneven Thai BL carrying its platform's mature rating, with a strong source and a cast that commits to the darkness of it. It is not the best-executed BL of 2026, but it is one of the few trying to be something other than comfort viewing.

Best for: viewers who want crime, consequence and moral compromise in their BL.
Skip if: you are looking for a light, healing romance.
